Hi, it's nice to meet you. I'm Pat and I live in Somerset in the south west of England. I learned to swing poi many years ago when I was a child in New Zealand (my Dad went out on a job contract) and rediscovered it earlier this summer when some young friends were doing a fire poi demo. I guess that swinging fire for the first time ever when the last time I swung poi was about 30 years ago was not the most sensible thing in the world but I did, and discovered that 1.you don't forget the skill and 2.it's an amazingly intense, almost meditational experience.

I work for a finance company maintaining their office computers, and my other interests include walking in wild places, swimming in the sea, growing plants for medicine and textiles/dyeing, singing early music, making and flying kites and generally being a disreputable old eccentric ex-hippie.

I too am often called a hippy and my nieces keep on telling me I'm old, so I guess we are in the same boat. I plan on never growing up and growing old disgracefully.

You say you make Kites. How big are they and what style? I have a yearning to learn to kite buggy, thats why I ask.

Hi wave
Welcome to HoP

Are you able to post any pics of your kites?
I've never seen any homemade ones before. (I don't think a bin bag stretched round 2 crossed sticks counts... aahhhhhhhh, the homemade kites of my youth! ubblol )

Mand that just gave me a flash back. When Hannah (my niece) was about 3 we went out on a windy day to the park. As she got out of the car a black bin bag came out of the footwell(Hannah used to get very car sick so I think it was there as a precaution) It started to blow away but she managed to catch hold of the edge of it. She ran across the park towing the bag behind her singing at the top of her voice "Fly Fat Bag FLY!" ubblol Where she got the fat bag bit from I have no idea. So I think 2 crossed sticks with a bin bag cover counts!

Yeah, I think my kites like that would've just flown better in their original state as binbags!

Answering several queries all at once:-

Bin bag kites are so proper kites.

I make mostly smallish kites, not big man/woman lifters or buggy kites, I'm currently doing a 2 metre diameter circoflex but I haven't got the leash right yet.

When & where is the Bristol Juggling Convention?

Where do I buy the kit for fire? Is there anywhere in Bristol?
