The 1 hander is all about timing, look at the movie on the site and try to mimic the shake-the-hand move and try to time it with the beats of the butterfly, you'll get it eventually.

Hmm, there's gotta be something round and shiny, I can play with

OK, I'm spinning with double loop grips and the one thing I found really made a difference to the sucess of my one handed butterfly was to remove BOTH grips from my fingers. I end up with one poi held between my thumb and forefinger, and the other held between my little finger and ring finger, which allows for maximum seperation of the chains. And, yes, the one handed bf goes overhead quite nicely, but what else can one do with it?

Here's my tip on the one handed butterfly:

Don't have any poi in your hand to start. Just hold out the hand you'll be using to spin both poi.

Now, put your arm straight out in front of you. Make a fist with your hand. Make sure the knuckles are facing the ceiling.

Now, keep your arm straight. Move your arm slightly upward (but keep it straight). Now, rotate your fist 90 degrees (as if you were gripping a beer mug).

Move the arm back downwards and rotate the fist so that the knuckles are once again facing the ceiling.

This basic movement is how you keep BOTH poi spinning. I like to rotate my fist 90 degrees while I move it up and down. Hope this helps.
