I would say that the H.o.P. community is a world authority in fire-twirling.

i don't think there could be one world authority on twirling. there are too many twirlers out there with too many different ideas on how to do things!!!

Though HoP is an amazing resorse and so many people from all over the world use these forums... I'd tend to think no...I don't think you can have an authority to such thing as this... I'd agree with margita that there is so many people out there with so many different ideas.... and also so many people who twirl and are not at all part of syber space internete world and to them... dare I say it, HoP dose not even exist...
I think something like twirling is quite a personal thing too... it kind of depends on your own interest and motivations and depends on your own personal preferance as to how you go about doing things too...
also where you learnt the art will effect your attitudes or if you taught yourself it's different again... everyone is coming from a really different place an so I don't think could be tied to one resorse as an authority...
Though, in saying that, i do think HoP is an amazing resorse and has some awesome information and guidence.... including technique, gear to use & safety info... So if there were to be a twirling *authority* I think HoP would be pretty high on the list of candidates

I think the word authority is the questionable word - HOP doesn't have any authority of over twirlers and how/when/why/where/etc they twirl, and its definatly not a governing body of any sort, and isn't used by alot of twirlers either.
Altho as an advisory board and a meeting place its invaluable, and more than has its place in twirling culture

to qualify the topic, i mean to say that *IF* there was anything closest to such concentration of expertise on fire-twirling, what comes closest?

erm.....maybe for English speaking world but that's quite a small portion really, like a fun size mars bar.
It's certainly the most comprehensive resourse that I've found but spherculism comes damned close with it's choice videos and less crap to wade through.
I think it's the active membership that make HoP so good with such a wide knowledge base we can all tap into and ask the same questions over and over again
Which reminds me...how do I colour my flames and what's the best tune to spin too? Let's relight this forum

i wouldn't choose the word authority. perhaps prototype is more accurate
even the people i know who spin who do not post on this site, still reference it to every new fire spinner they come across. so i'd say HOP is definately the foundation.
I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

I always tell people to look here if they're interested.
The resources contained in the lessons are incredible. They could well be considered to be a world-wide authority on how to start spinning poi and staff. But the forums (fora), whilst they contain tons of information, are not accessible enough to be considered in the same way.
And yes, i know anyone can access them, but very often the information, (because it comes from lots of different people, all explaining in a different way) can be misleading.
