I was always scared with my mother's obsession with the good scissors. It made me wonder if there were evil scissors lurking in the house somewhere.

In the Last 7 Years of Fire Dancing I have introduced To Many people in both Poi and Staff. But most fizzle out after they find its not as easy as it looks wink

Its funny, I went back to Missoula MT. after a few years in Alaska, and found 5 of my Ex-Girlfriends all living together, and Now Spinning Poi! None of these girls knew eachother when I knew them, and only one spunn fire!! eek ubblol eek Now all 5 spinn, and I guess I was the Cumin-denominator. ubblol juggle

It seems that I have taught people who then inturn taught people and the Web is Started. There was very little, to almost No Fire dancing in Montana before I taught some collage students there, now there are a few troops in both Missoula and Bozeman!! My God has it grown in the last 5-8 years!!!! eek

only 1 really, and it was quite recently too.

the guy i showed was already a good juggle and was able to pick up the 3bt weaves weavesmiley (forward & reverse) and a load of butterfly variations within about 10 minutes, i swear! i was quite jealous!

within a half hour he was already attempting the 5bt weave without any instruction from me..... eek

My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely smile

Yup I introduced 4 of my friends and my little brother to the delights of poi... it was an amazing experience learning with a friend, we were both trying 5bt weave and got it within 30 seconds of each other which incurred much excited... "did you see it? I think I did it! Is that definately it? Wahoo..."

I think everyone should share the love, I just hope poi doesn't become... horror of all horrors... 'mainstream'... then again it takes far too much patience for most!

I've introduced a few people to it but I think only one has actually stuck to it. Most people I've shown think it looks cool and learn the 3 bt weave then lose interest...

Quite a lot of my friends had an initial interest in poi, which was cool but I think most gave up on the idea of it being an effort to learn. About 5 of them are still spinning (as far I know/hope).

And the other day someone who was interested not last April, but the one before, decided to try poi again. When they realised that they could still do the moves that they'd learnt, they've now decided to spin properly as a hobby! (so proud!)

I've just come home after travelling for 2 1/2 years, I picked up poi in Brisbane a couple of years ago, and during my travels I've taught at least 50 people basics... I only know 3 who've kept it up (but then, I'm not in contact with most of them).weavesmiley
i tend to teach people to turn, do butterfly and simple corkscrew, cos i find them easy to explain. biggrin
Mozy, that guy who teaches everyone in Cairns - are you talking about John from Firetribe?!! He was great, taught me loads of stuff in that square bit in the centre of town, and started fire gatherings at Lake Placid on friday nights... he shaved his head, but had a long ponytail he dyed neon colours... oh yeah, and had the most horrific leopard skin print tight flares I have ever seen. cool

I have introduced a couple of people to poi and as much as i love them and were happy for them i couldnt help but feel the pinch of jealousy when they picked up tricks that might have taken me a week to learn in less than half an hour. I guess some people nauarally find it easier to learn than others.

But i have found nothing more satisfying than watching them pick up poi and getting the hang of it. Particularly watching kids try and learn their incoordination is so adorable but yet so clever once they get the hang of it.
