West African tribal spiritual practice, huh? What areas? I go to West African dance 1-3 times a week and the teacher discusses a lot of the culture and stuff. She was trained at Les Ballet African in Guinea. Have you ever heard of Kakilambe or Nimbe? Please excuse me if I totally bastardized the spelling on those.

Anyways, hello and welcome.

i don't do african dance, but purely artistically speaking what i do is very much like african mask dancing... we have the same roots... i studied african mask dancing back in the day, and i'm very influenced... our parties/shows are sort of a modern version of african community ritual, with lots of native american energy thrown in, and of course all in fairy folk regalia.

The interesting times thing is either (IMO) a chinese proverb or a Pratchett reference.
Second star to the right is from Peter Pan (or Star Trek 6). Not sure why you spelt "straight wrong though. That could be a genuine mistake.

Should i stop being clever now?

the path i study comes from dahomey. and don't worry about the spelling. out here it comes from slave so the language is kreyol so the spelling dosn't mater as everybody writes it different and as its an oral tradition many of the words are pronounced diferently. i don't know your referances but do you know Na Na buklu, Da and the rainbow serpint, or the Marase? i'm in california and it is hard to find a "white freindly gruop" or any group for that matter.

I'll try to check with my teacher on those when I go to class tomorrow, if I remember by then. If you ever want to check out some of the dancing, they have it a couple times a week at the Dance Collective in Crenshaw. I would have to warn you that there have been times that I was the only white person in the class, not that people aren't white-friendly there, usually quite the opposite. but it is in the ghetto so to speak. and i did get stuck in a police blockade my first time there. my car was on the news. so, it's all in good fun and was actually kind of amusing. Unfortunately, the studio is closing on May 31 indefinitely. and this wednesday will be my last class there before i set off traveling.
but if you want any info, let me know.

By the way, Arashi, I've done two dances that use masks. One is called Joey and its a harvest dance (one of my favorites actually) and the other is Kakilambe. It's done in reverence to the god Kakilambe who comes every nine years to bless the land. If he doesn't come, its not good news to say the least. Anyways, that's one of the dances that is done on stilts and the masks are usually effigies of him. Its a fun dance.
