Ok, is it just me or do women have an unfair advantage when it comes to learning new moves? Firstly, due to life being unfair, most women can dance, or at least wobble competently whilst the majority of blokes are left standing rigid or look like they've got a wasp climbing up their arse, thus giving girls the advantage of looking kewl even by doing a 3bt Weave. Secondly, men have a REALLY painful target area which invariably gets twatted at full pelt whilst trying to learn new moves - most notably for me the 5bt weave and (more comically) a sort of upper thigh wrap where both pois looped round my legs and slammed into my groin at the same time (ohhh, how I laughed...) Finally, and I admit this is lame, but I was told once that all arguements should have 3 points, women are more slightly built and so can get away with using lighter poi (which don't hurt as much) and get hit less often...Are these fair points or is this just the grumbling of a poi-er who has had one-too-many child threatening moments?Oh and girls, before you complain, you have NO idea what 'nad pain feels like------------------I have only one burning desire....let me stand next to your fire

How funny that only guys answered this message, haahaaahaa...I agree that we are equally advantaged and disadvantaged, I have a gig every sunday and have to twirl for 2 1/2 hours and by the end when I am getting tired, I always end up with a million tiny bruises on my ass, so actually, maybe we look like we are dancing much more, because we have to move that ass out of the way!!!! haahaa.I just have to say that when you hit yourself hard, it hurts, whether it is in the nads or in the boobs!Anyhow, it's not a competition is it??Peace out,Sacha

I've been teaching a few people lately and found that there does seem to be an innate ability. If a newbie can spin in split time and in time at the start, it's going to be a fast learning curve. If they really need to concentrate to get them split or even, it's going to go slowly.

As to speed of learning - I fully agree that being able to switch from split to sync'd from the start is a great sign of a quick learner. I'm a drummer and as soon as I picked them up I was off and learnt the whole of the "Art of Poi" video in about 2 weeks, the 5bt Weave in an evening (With instruction) yet some friends (including jugglers, and other stuff) really can't get the hang of poi. And from my personal experience, if a girl can't do it - she REALLY can't do it, yet most guys can get a basic spin going. Whenever I have a flexibility test, they measure the gap betwenn my fingers and the thing I'm supposed to push and write down that figure in NEGATIVE NUMBERS!As far as touching my toes, i can do that with a stick or something, but no chance at all.So I'm a male, completely inflexible and a professional performer to boot. I can't say that i've noticed any differences that are gender related in relation to poi, some move better than others, some are more motivated, some mind the pain others barely notice.I have to add that of the people I know, the X,X's are harder working and more motivated whilst a lot of guys seem to think that poi practice involves an inordinate quantity of 'Pocket Billiards!'[This message has been edited by hexonlegs (edited 25 October 2001).]

I think girls (in london at least) tend to go more in the direction of dance, and learn transitions and making pretty patterns (which is the only type of poi I do now) whereas guys tend to learn "moves" without a lot of thought to where their feet are going......so from a performance / my personal point of view "them girl things" look heaps more interesting far quicker......but if you develop a severe compulsive disorder you can almost keep up with them.....well nearly almost.....

if you dont have a protector thing, shove a book down your underpants (talking paperback size, rather than encyclopedia...although that depends ) trust me - it works! just dont tell the owner of the book
women tend to be able to move their shoulders and hips more separately than guys, who are generally less flexible in that respect. because of that, i think they may look more like fire 'dancing' - but thats a very vague generalisation.
if you want to look cool [or kewl] - practice - i learnt many moves in the first 4-5 months of poi. but then didnt learn a new move for about 8 months cos of other interests - but learnt to move with the moves i knew, and to make smooth transitions with moves and...dance. im not the best, but i can move.
theres no barrier to dancing with poi - you just gotta practice - just like poi itself [do a search, dancing has been discussed before]
the point about being able to use lighter poi as a woman i dont get. you can spin with any weight. i prefer heavy equipment cos it gives be a better workout and increases endurance, and cos of the bigger flame!! [2.5inch cathedrals, soaked in kero, at the end of 4ft chains is pretty tiring]

Jeeze, I'm holding out hope that Charles is right about learning moves that make one look flexible!! I was definitely passed over when the "grace and elegance" brush was going around... but then, neither do I have too much of a problem with breasts getting in the way!!

I have noticed that Guys do tend to be more technical in their spinning, they do in that respect learn things much quicker, however Women learn how to be more fluid in their moves quicker than guys IMHO.
