Hello and welcome,

I've been twirling for a little bit less time than you and just lit up this past week. I know how you feel. Other twirlers are really supportive though and it helped a lot. Just remember to breathe and take it easy. You'll do fine. Good luck.

And don't worry about hitting yourself. If you wear cotton clothes and wet/tie back your hair, you're not going to catch fire unless you really hold the wicks to yourself. If you keep that in mind as you spin you'll be far less nervous.
good luck! let us know how it goes.

Paddy, I know your sentiment is there but it pays to define things a little more than making a blanket statement like that.

JordanLisa, here's a few things that Paddy is assuming you will be doing, but hasn't mentioned yet. Best of all check out all the info on the left hand side of this site...

1. Spinning out the wicks, or squeezing them, before lighting - residual fuel can soak into your clothes and continue burning.
2. Try to use a low temp burning flame like kero or lamp oil, white-gas and others have a hotter burner temp so are more likely to ccause injury or accidental lighting.
3. Not wearing loose weaved cotton, the looser it is the more air surrounds it and the easier it burns. EG torn jeans frequently catch on fire with frays, whereas normal denim is very difficult to light up.
4. Not breaking wind when doing behind the back moves
5. ALWAYS HAVING A SAFETY WITH A FIREBLANKET (not a wet towel, steam burns just as bad as fire).

Just a few words of caution...

Play safe everyone...
