Alright, so everyone I am certain knows of the tshirt competition, and that the proceeds are to go to an international gathering of spinners in NZ.What I was thinking is that it might be easiest for us to create this like a convention. Rent a venue with insurance for the three days. Have stages where people can spin and showcase. Have vendors with items available for sale or display. Have a general gathering area, etc. This way the cost can be defrayed by sponsorship, it will be easier to get airlines to discount tickets and hotels to discount rooms. Then on Saturday night we can have some honking big free spin ala Burning Man and such. I was thinking that since there is so many of these little BM things sprouting up all over that this might be a fun and different direction to go. We can also retire the relay equipment that weekend, and maybe kick off a new project?I know there are enough businesses that would be interested, what about everyone else? Would many of you be interested in attending anyway? Or is this ganna be small and intimate with us dieharders?Anyway, that is my .02 on the thing. Other ideas would be great! Also needed would be any NZ-ers interested in helping plan the thing when the time comes? And when should we start with this stuff anyway?Oh...and I was thinking November of 2003 since it is turning to sumer down under. Any other dates which might be more suitable? If need be I can start an egroup about this.....Thanks for any ideas and input!------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com

Just for grins, I checked some fares from Paris to Auckland (assuming 3-week advance, with a weekend stay). There were a lot in the range of US$1,700, which converts to FFr 12,250.From London to Auckland, it's better--about US$1,200 or FFr 8,650.Still not cheap, but not as bad. And it's cheaper than a flight from Austin (about $1400).

Well, I have to agree with adamrice when he says not to make this thing too far in the future. On the other hand, the father it is, the better I'll be able to afford it! Another consideration - don't make it too close to Burningman (late August) becuase many of the American burners will be tapped out of cash and vacation time around then due to attending that event (which ain't a cheap thing to do right). February sounds good to me - that's our rainy season here in Houston and I'll be glad to get out then. 2003 sounds better than 2004.

Would promoters be cool with...OMG how many ppl are we gonna have? 100 plus possiably? Perhaps even higher??

ok, here are three quicky ideas (forgive me if they have already been mentioned somewhere...)1. for fuel would it make sense to order something like a semitruck full of airplane fuel or kero? then people could buy what they need on site or buy a "cup" that gets refilled as often as you need it, kind of like the grand keg of kero.2. anyone thought of contacting the guiness book of world records to see if it would be possible to create/break the record for total mass of fire spinners at one site? i'm not sure how many folks burned at one time at burningman but it would be cool to find out that number so we can have a ballpark range for what to shoot for. 3. for a random contest how about a flambe recipe cook off? hee hee or a poi (taro) pounding contest. smile

hey all :-)Just thought I'd add that the NZ juggling festival is usually over a weekend in the middle of feb. So it's important that they don't clash, and it would be fantastic if they're close enough that overseas people can go to both if they want to. I've already talked about this with cassandra, but anyway.....I'll probably be involved in organising the juggling festival, so please get in touch with me if you want me to help co-ordinate between the two. Even though they'd remain separate events, there would be lots of things, like publicity, for example, where co-operation would help both events. If you're going to come all the way to NZ, you may as well have 2 parties instead of one ;-) The exact date venue for the 2003 festival has yet to be decided, but we'll probably know by february 2002, as it normally gets decided at the preceding festival. If you let me know what you've worked out so far for the fire gathering, I can bring it up at the juggling agm so everybody knows where they stand smile Actually now I think of it, you'll be there yourself, Charles, so that won't be a problem ;-)Oh yeah......might want to check with the metservice and the fire service about the possibility of fire bans. We were stuck with one last feb at Paekakariki, even below the tide line they wouldn't let us play frown The permit we applied for nearly got passed, but the powers that be changed their mind at the last minute. Auckland would be less of a problem cause it wouldn't be so dry, but still, we don't want everyone coming over here and not being allowed to play shockedDo you have a venue in mind yet?xs

the memories fire, the rhythm falls slow....

Venue is under debate still Xaeda, we have been kicking around several ideas given to us by Charles and RObert Michael. This will be taking place in Auckland (their home town). The date we are looking at is Early Feb 2003. Charles brought up the juggling conv. you are talking about and so we were hoping ot have them close enough together that people can go to both without overlapping them.Knagi, here is what we are working on pulling off, the whole idea is kind of like two events all at the same time.Event 1: We are going to get a convention going, you know with booths, games, workshoppes, presentations and performances. This would preferably be indoors somewhere and is open to the general public, meaning anyone can come in. The Convention would be on a Sat and Sun. Event 2: The Home of Poi gathering. We are hoping to have starting maybe around Weds or so, when people start to arrive, some kind of touristy stuff available to do, that would give the HoP people a chance to get to know each other as people, not just as spinners, hang and see lovely NZ. We are hoping to have an all day party BBQ thing on Friday, where all the HoPpers can get together, spin, hang, play games, retire the relay, yadda, yadda, yadda.......Sat and Sun night we would like to have themed type spin parties: such as Tribal one night and Techno the next. These things will be posted so you can have time to plan the proper "wardrobe" in time! wink(now that I am thinking about it, customs at Auckland airport will be earning their paycheck that week won't they!!! grin All those fire toys coming into the counrty!)Anyway Melissa...loved the ideas!!!The Keg of fuel or a public fuel thing was discussed and I like how you presented it! Thank you. Makes you wonder what kind of permit we will have to have, doesn't it? shockedLast I knew Guiness Book no longer condoned actions which were concidered "dangerous to self or others", and last I read all things fire fall under that category. However, when we get closer to the venue date, I will contact them and see what they have to say.I love the flambe and hot foods recipe cook off idea!!! How funny! We were looking at possible games to play too! Malcolm is hooked on the idea of the behind the back weave 100 yard dash! Fun! Fun! Fun!!!!!! smileThanks for all the info and suggestions, keep them coming!------------------Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir...https://www.pyromorph.com

hey for location are there any dried out lake beds like what burningman uses? or vegetatively baren areas that are surrounded with stone or cement? if we have a location like that (or at least a designated safe to burn ares) we won't need to worry as much about creating wild fires. i guess that beaches could be an option but i would worry about the environmental impact there if you have tons of fire and fuel being spun around. maybe a bunch of really really big warehouses or airplane hangers might work. i've never been to n.z. so i'm not quite sure what to suggest as far as specific sites. as far a dates ya i think early feb or late january would be nice.
