my brother started learning poi a month ago after watching me hit myself for six months...... he can already do btb butterfly and nearly a figure 8 too....... i think it has something to do with the fact that he is six foot six and has arms the length of an orangutan?

seems to help if you swing lower than normal, almost behind your bum, if you are used to swinging at waist chest height in front, also, starting in front (obvoiusly) doing a few swings back and forth and slowly moving hands closer together? i dunno...... this was probably already apparent to you `

Currently on the right side up of the world.

Dunno how tall you are, but I'm short and the biggest thing stopping me from doing btb stuff is the fact that the poi were hitting the ground and I didn't realise it.

Only discovered it when someone pointed it out to me. After that I managed to get the butterfly btb, but when trying to graduate to btb weave yesterday someone mentioned that the poi were hitting the ground, which I hadn't realised!

when starting the weave the first thing i recommened doing is taking one poi, crossing your arm behind your back, an dspinning it at your side over there. if this isn't natural ur going to keep having problems with your weave. (I'm still trying to remember to practice going fwds....) oh, and start out with reverse, it's way easier!

then of course...whatever you need to learn with one poi.... (good call whiffle squeek...) and then have fun hitting urself some more....

Really? hmmmm, very interesting I still can't get a normal reverse weave right though, I can go from right to left just fine, but instead of going back left to right like I should, I automatically bring both poi over my head into a windmill. Every single time, I have no idea how to stop, it just happens.

taht is interesting.... i'm not sure if taht would effect ur learning reverse btb, it feels like a different animal to me than the reverse weave. for example, you'd turninto a reverse btb form a fwd weave.... i dunno.... hmmmm i guess it should affect it... my reverse weave, altho the sencond one i got, smoothed out a lot faster. unfortunetly, i practiced fwd so much it now sucks agian..... but i cna't do fwd btb weave at all... (oddly my right hand is more retatrded, tho they both are)... hmm.

ok ros hunny, lets see if i can explain teh turns thing.... oh bah, someone explained it too me, but i haev no idea where or what teh thread is.... hmm

ok, so you have a fwd weave. now, lets say for eth sake of argument you turn left. so, as you turn, you are going to leave your right hand where it is, basically. so now ur facing the other way completly, and you right hand is crossed behind your back, and you should be able to start a reverse btb weave. It takes a little doing to figure out where in your fwds weave you turn to make it smooth, nad i'm not even going to try explaining that.

taht make any sense? bug me if it doesn't hun..

oh, and i'd presume you can do teh same thing with reverse weave/ fwds btb but since i cna't do a fwds btb i have no idea....

I'm not sure I would agree with Kyrian - I found the forward btb weave a hell of a lot easier to learn than backwards, although that might just be because I learnt forwards first. I just really didn't like the poi flying towards my head - by the time I had realised my line was off, I'd usually smacked myself in the forhead (actually splitting it a couple of times - my spinning's slowed down a lot since then!)

Ros - with the turns, you would go the opposite way to when the weave is in front of you. If the poi are on your left, turn to the right.
You start the turn after the second beat (ie, when both poi have made one circle on one side), and they move straight over to the other side for three beats.

Hope that helps

J

Thanks Jephrye... ur turn explanation makes mroe sense i think...

oodly i hit myself in twh head whilst attempting to do teh fwds btb... hence why i think learning the reverse may haev been easier... they never came near my head then.... hmm, am i upside down again? I know I have my directiosn right, but i often seem to tangle myself in places normal people don't.....

I find that if you just throw your hands over your shoulder whilst doing the butterfly you can pull it off ver easily.

i think that would be a behind the head butterfly as opposed to a behind the back one - where the butterfly is at the same height as it would be in front of you, but behind you. Methinks. not sure. Oh well.

And the before mentioned move has not yet been repeated. And now I know I can do it, the failure to repeat it is just that much harder to bear. hmmm........

hey,
I learnt to do the BTB Weave yesterday.
I started with a poi in my right hand and did one swing on my right side then tuck it behind my back and did two swings on the left etc.
then I did the opposite with my left hand, obviously still going behind my back!
then i just swung them around backwards together, split them so they were swinging at opposite time then led with my right hand and just followed with my left following the same principles as the weave in front of you! I learnt it in 1/2 an hour, can't quite do it cleanly yet but with a bit of practise then i will! the 1/2 hr thing...welll, I have learnt almost all the moves in the "Poi Lessons" and a few more in just over a month which I am very pleased about! Mind you, I practise lots and had 2 brilliant teachers!
Start with the practise poi otherwhise you are going to hurt yourself bad, I hit myself in the nose yesterday, ouch! While I was scared of it hitting me then I couldn't do the ove at all as soon as I realised that being scared made it worse then I got it like, not long after!!!
well, hope that helps....is it worth my time learning the BTB Weave going forwards??? I need to learn new moves!!!! AHHHHH!!!!
Luv 2 ya all,
Lyd's

Neo:Wow, that sounds like a really good deal, but I have a better one. How about I give you the finger and you give me my phone call?

grin while we are at it....
why does the btb butterfly work when i stand like a duck (rear out...which looks extremely silly)
but not when i stand up straight??? it is really annoying hmph. works with one poi and as soon as i bring the second in.....

oh and what do u people do with your elbows? mine seem to specialise in catching chain (can't seem to practise with practise pois any more i miss the weight.....) and that leads to ouchers...not that i mind ouchers in moderation but for some odd reason hitting the forarm hurts like $%&/.
