Finally got myself a pair of Malcolm's really wicked "Wolf's Revenge" poi.
The cable seems to swing a bit differently from the chains I normally use. Actually had quite a blast them until one of the poi wrapped around my right wrist and seared a bit of my skin (now I know what burning flesh smells like) 
. I love using the set though, and won't give it up. 
Wearing a jumper while spinning isn't quite a luxury I have given that I live in an exceeedingly warm country. Would you guys know of anything else I might be able to try (at least until I stop hitting myself so often)? Are those fire-retardant car-racing arm thinggies or is it safer to brave the cords and stick to a standard shirt?

you can just cut the arms off an old jumper so you are only wearing them where they will be usefull and aviod over heating if you were wearing a whole jumper. Or you could move to England where your problem is only relevant about three times a year. Actually its pretty nice today.

How about a thin, loose cotton top (the type hippies wear)
Or cut the arms off a tight long -sleeve t-shirt to cover the parts of your arms that get hit most.
Also if you're using a hotter fuel (e.g. white gas) you're more likely to get a burn & scar than if you're using lamp oil.

how about cutting the sleves off a long armed tee shirt, and using those and pull on arm protectors, mena syou just pull them on and off while you are spinning?

yeah long arm bands is the go. They look really awesome when you twirl poi, I had a mate who use to wear massive goth gauntlets when he twirled

If you get hold of some leather, it's really easy to make forearm protectors - just cut a slightly tapered rectangle of leather to fit your forearm, make a row of holes down each edge and cut a couple of thin strips to lace it up with. Looks well 'ard, too

I've used the kevlar sleeves made for race-car pit crews. They're very effective, but a bit itchy. Lost mine--need another set.
Perhaps the cheapest and easiest arm guard is tube socks with the toes cut off. Wet them down with water before you light up for best effect.

Interesting how i have the complete opposite problem as i need devil sticks to be in contact with my skin to provide enough grip to perform most tricks. Sleeves just mess it all up. Unless i was to wear some super grippy Sleeves like PVC or lycra Hmm...

It went BADLY wrong and he cooked himself like a lobster. His dry clothes caught fire, heated the water on the damp clothes and caused him to have 3rd degree steam burns over a good share of his body. His friends did the stop-drop-and roll, but since the water of the clothes was already heated the burning process continued. He was admitted to the ER and remained in the burn unit for a fairly long time. He had taken what he thought was good safety precautions, even had friends who knew what to do, and was injured far worse than if he had have stayed in dry clothes.

on a scar prevention note for the burn you already have:
lavender oil and vitamin E oil (you can just squidge it out of the capsules you get as supplements, but once the burn has healed over - not into raw-flesh-badness)
alternatively pick at the scabs and have scar to remind you not to hit yourself with flames again.

never assume that someone's else's choice in fire tools/clothing will stuit every person.
always try to think of how best to take elements of what you like and how you twirl. that is all that counts.

thems bracers have definitely saved me a few times from nasty twine-poi death. costed about $15AU to make too!!
that's cheaper than Antartic Ayahausca!

another thing to try is to get cotton stockings, cut the legs and feet off and wear them on your arms. I have found that this reduces burns and also looks really funky if you get striped stockings to cut up : )

i find that well fitting cotton baseball style t-shirt is enough to protect my upper boddy from harm. For my head hair i wear my trusty-poi-spinning-beanie or "skelly cap."
oh and.. one piece of advice.. poi and loose suspenders dont mix. sure the suspenders look awesomely nerdy, but then the loops fall over your arms and you almost burn yourself but luckily are able to throw you poi in the sand.. .heh.. yeah..

Just a couple questions: Can you put them on by yourself? And I see you just wrap the lace around and around your arm. How do secure it at the end? I can't quite tell from your picture.

Okay, I made some bracers today out of black denim, and despite the gigantic hems (
) they're pretty cool. I'm going to look to see if we have some leather kicking around somewhere though.
