Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

Ooooooo That seems to have it a nerve with Gidg wink ubblol

How did it get to be Monday morning again so damn quickly? How did I manage to get through the entire weekend without actually tiling my bathroom? Do I have enough grouting gloop? Why am I on this computer instead of just doing the damn tiling? How many stamps will it take to send UCoF his super hero cape? Why does my head hurt? Who are my last banana? ...............

poor thing - tut tut.

if it is of any consolation, I once tiled my diningroom floor in two days but took a year and a half to get around to ever grouting it!

ubblol Thats the problem! I have been renovating this house for 6 years...... its driving me nuts! When I got it there was no bathroom and a kitchen that consisted of a sink, a free standing rusty gas cooker and a bathtub with a flip down work surface over it. There was no heating apart from 2 storage heaters and it needed damp proofing, rewiring and generally bringing it out of the 1950's. It will be finished one day...... but when that day will be is anyones guess ubblol I've lived and learned an awful lot but this house still keeps on throwing those curve balls at me. You don't happen to know a dishy carpenter that wants to date a flaky spinner do you? ubblol

by te time you are finished, it'll be time to start renovating again!

you need a bored man around the house who is good with tools.

like they say, "the ladies don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

gotta watch out for bored guys with tools though - they tend to start more projects than they finish. Plus you may come home and find something upgraded that you didn't want messed with!

you don't have to live in a church to have high ceilings! mine are high enough to spin in, and Babaja's aprtment you can do staff throws in (th place is hell to heat though!).

Germans do like their high ceilings though, which are also effective for chaining up slaves - they feel much more inadequate chained to a big wall than a small one - probably especially true for man slaves...

ubblol This is Wales Vanize where the average height is about 5'7"! They didn't build their housed with high ceilings! So if I'm going to stay in Wales it will have to be a chapel or a school hall.

sounds like between all your renovating and height needs, you might be better off just building your own house!

Actually, you would be the land owner hopefully, and he would be the rest. that way, when he is done - you can kick him out instead of vice versa!

bah - that was a whole day ago - can't remember it now exactly. had something to do with poi people all being masocists and hurting themselves all the time anyway so we should have to wear orange and white beads and then tell eeveryone we do not intend to stop our self harm and all that. Just as well I didn't post it as it sounds not only insensitive to the thread meaning, but also pretty lame now that I look at it again...
