Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

I've been told to watch chocolat before actually, but never got around to it. I wanted to see it while it was still at the art film theater back when I was in grad school, but never found the time (damned grad school - I'm never doing that again!)

and oh yeah, I forgot to include a picture of my self. This is me with a hangover:

Hello! So excellent to see your intro at last. ::cuddles vanize:: You remind me of someone in your photo, but I can't quite put my finger on whom. I have this fleeting mental image of small round glasses.

Allright, Van. Let's hear about "Pixie Banger." If I can shove a tube into a guy's bladder without it fazing me, I think I can handle anything.

Good to see you in my thread Regyt - thanks for taking the invite. I tend to think that in that picture I look like the evil 'toon in who "who framed rodger rabbit"

Hi Cass!!! great to have you around my place again, even if it is only virtual this time. Looking forward to that stroll thru Paris - perhaps after the EJC? We'll have to see how the vacation time goes though. Hope you don't mind my neice joining us if she is visiting me then. No need to take pot shots at my ego - it seems to be the favorite pass time of South African women, so you needn't worry about it getting too inflated till after I get to Berlin.

Lightning - I'm going to give you three stories about Pixie Banger. One and a half is true - guess which:

1) I was at a beach rave one night a couple years ago spinning fire and talking to lots of people. A couple days later, all the Houston area fire performers registered on HoP get an email from someone with an email handle of "Pixie Child" saying they wanted to learn poi. A few of respond, and the only person who gets a response in return is me. So Pixie Child shows up to my apartment one day after I agree to show here some basics. Turns out she is really cute, an ex-gymnast (still very petite though), and 17 (ie, just over 1/2 my age at the time). Evidently she saw me at the beach rave, and wasn't particularly interested in poi lessons after all. And yes, 17 is legal in Texas, as she was so quick to inform me... ubbangel

2) I have many faeries, sprites, pixies, and other bothersome, semi-sentient diminutive woodland creatures in and around my life. While faeries can be a little drool with their self deluding fantasies and make quite a mess with all their glitter, and sprites are a bit ill mannered in in terms of their social interactions, I can more or less deal with them. However, pixies are another story. They want everone to beleive they are just as sweet and kind as faeries, but the whole time they are sceming all sorts of practicle jokes and other mayhem, just waiting for you to become complacient so they can pull a fast one on you. They are insidious! So I have developed several elite pixie hunting tequniques. These usually involve a large stick with knobby spikes on it. The spikes are good for damaging their wings. That way, if you only 'wing' one as it flits by, then often even only minor damage to a wing will cause it to descend to earth in a rapid spiral where you can club it much more more easily than when it is in the air. While the butterfly type wings of a faerie are more for beauty than flight agility, they are much more robust than the dragonfly type wings that give pixies their speed and manuverability. I also tend to think that it is jealousy of the faerie wings that drives pixies to be so malcontent at heart while still wanting everyone to love them as faeries are loved. umm

3) PIXIE stands for 'Polar Ionospheric X-Ray Imaging Experiment', an X-ray camera on the Polar spacecraft science mission, which I used data from for my masters dissertation (well, not the PIXIE instrument, but another one). So back in the day when they were still mounting the instruments to Polar's payload deck and I was still an early grad student, my advisor and I (along with some other people working with the upcoming mission that were all at the same meeting) were allowed in the cleanroom to check out the spacecraft up close, which was really cool. Well, to make a long and embarrasing story short, they shouldn't allow a klutz like me around really expensive hardware, because I managed to kick over... actually, I'm not exactly sure what it was for, but it was a long peice of aluminum C-channel stock (a U-shaped peice of aluminum rod for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about), which fell square on the the PIXIE instrument with a loud clang. That was tense, I'll tell you! Luckily the instrument was fine (it had to be designed to go thru the rigors of being launched into space after all!), but it was a long time before my advisor let me live it down. rolleyes

And last, but not least - Pounce, my favorite HoP tounge! I trust you like the modifications I am making to your dungeon. Once I get things in there settled to my extremely rigourous virgo standards, I think you'll be seeing quite a lot of me in there. Virgos make the best doms you know...
