How to keep the momentum? I do 2-4 continous half-steves, but then its turning very slow. How to gain/lose momentum/ speed ?

How to keep the momentum? It's always like 2-4 times, then the staff dosen't spinn anymore and i have to walk around the staff and it's not turning at all.
