Does anyone else feel awkward spinning in public i.e a park?
I do it because its scenic and open but i hate it when people stare.
I know i know its a performance art but when i'm trying to learn a trick or just straight grove it kinda bothers me.

I haven't spun in public yet considering it's ass cold outside. I think I'd hate it when people stare too, unless I'm doing it with lights or fire in the dark. But it would bother me if they did that kind of stare, that is not just watching you, but is a weird disturbing stare, I can't really explain, but I'm sure you know the difference.

hmm...sometimes, but i guess it depends on the individual spinner how awkward you feel!
but i find turning away from them helps sometimes...even if they are still staring, you can just do your thing & not pay them any attention! people often stare cos they've never seen spinning before, they're not judging how good you are or if you feel really awkward, maybe just tell them that you're new at it & you're just a learner? they'll wander off eventually...

It's not something I've ever had a huge problem with, if I'm waiting around and trying to pick a trick up I tend to just spin absent-mindedly...

Last time I spun in a public place people didn’t stare just shouted abuse.
I went back the next day just to prove a point.
You should spin for your own enjoyment not for the animals who cares what they think.

I usually spin in a small park near my house, it's normally great, but it's prone to annoying children/families coming over to annoy me.
Normally there'd be 1 or 2 people watching me, and most of the time they're quiet or nice, the rest of the time they're stupid chavs with annoying questions, or children who ask me a lot of stupid questions.
But I wouldn't say I feel awkward, just annoyed really.

I just got back from a small meet up at a park down the road from me, and im not embarrassed to be honest. I admit, i know very few and basic tricks, but i do spins and move around to make it look better so i just dont stand there doing the same old boring thing over and over.
But i do find it a biiiit seedy when people stare >.<

Yeah, there's just that wierd feeling you can't get rid of when people stare.As for me, I've been getting more confident with people around me whne I practice, but a park near me is a little too far for regular practice there, about a 20-30 minute walk. The best I could do for open would be behind the elementary school by me, which is about a 5 minute walk, but with a lot of annoying little kids to bother me.

I just kind of spin wherever. I've learned to ignore staring. Most people don't know what your doing and others (like high schoolers) see what your doing and think of ways to make fun of it. But just relax, people will ignore it eventually.

I tend to freeze up whenever I try to spin poi or contact juggle in public, unless I'm part of a group.. I just go mind blank.. Bit rubbish for a performance art.
However, I was very happy to discover I can hoop in the park solo no problems, even when people are gawping shamelessly.. I just tend to bring down a spare hoop so passers by can play too

I describe myself as a bit of an evangelical spinner, so the more people know about poi and try it out (I have a bag with about eight pairs of spare poi), the merrier. Since I practice pretty early in the morning or late at night, though, I do have to deal with the occasional creepy drunk guy, but I'm bigger and angrier than them, so I'm not too worried.

Same here, when I first started though, I was nervous of even my so old, they're nearly dead, neighbors of seeing it. But, as I go on with this and performing for friends, I've all round gained more self-confidence in everything and don't care as much about people seeing what I'm doing. This applies to most everything. I know getting used to this has given me more confidence to socialize more, what I used to be incapable of at any level except for my close friends.

Good point, at that point just gotta get used to the plain fact that people will stare, but you don't have to deal with paying attention to them. I need some earbuds that STAY IN MY EARS while I spin, because all the ones I've had just come out, especially when I pirouette or whirl.

i was just going to post a topic about this, glad i searched first. im terrified of practicing in public, as if everyone watching is expecting a performance instead of me consistently bruising myself.
music used to help me ignore it, but my mp3 player broke and my cd player skips when i spin >.<
helps to have moral support. a friend or another spinner will erase almost every worry

its amazing how if you change sets you can work on some things more. i LOVE it.
