Look no further than the "go shopping" tab, comfortably situated between the "articles" and "the competitions" tabs.

Posted: I just made a pair of sock poi last night (kinda wish I had started with them, actually) out of... socks! And tennis balls. If you have long socks with neat colors (or stripes) it looks cooler, but plain old knee-length socks are perfect. The most comfortable thing for me is to tie a not at the end and then close those little plastic easter-egg things (you know the ones?) around the knot so you have a nice little round handle to hold on to, then you can just let it hang between your forefinger and middle finger.
If you have some beaded curtain chain you can make a pretty decent set too - drill a hole through two big superballs... Use glow-in-the-dark ones if you want them to glow-in-the-dark... Then just make some nylon loop handles that feel comfortable to you.
As far as just starting out, the HOP Library has a lot of good information for techniques and related info, and like Rouge said the HOP shop has everything! Oh, and if you're ever in need of inspiration, there are tons of poi videos in the gallery and on Youtube.

Posted: HOP library is a great resource, like Mucky said, and the books and dvds available in the HOP store are also great like Rouge Dragon said (I especially dug Scales of Poi, though that's not totally for beginners). So basically, ditto them. Plus, welcome!
