no ry sparkley poi is fine so long as you have plenty of space... and if you are talking about steel wool poi you need ample lots of space with no-one around

I don't think I've actually band anything as such here

just as it was already ...no fire breathing... no drugs or alcohol.... and simple respect for one another and responsibility of your actions.

most of the rules go without saying... it's just a matter of using your own common sense.

so no... nothing other than the usual is band... crazy huge fire props and things untested maybe ... but I don't recall banning sparkler poi.

and just to clarify... adrian I didn't mean to make you feel discluded or unwelcome... just that you don't have to be there if you dissagree or don't like the way it's run... perhaps I missinterprited what you were saying... but I'm happy with the way things go... and bringing up all these questions asking what is allowed and what isn't just stirs everyone up... like "sparklers are band???" of corse not...

it's just a matter of looking at the invironment and making a judgement as to what is safe within the space... if you are putting yourself or others at risk of injury then of corse no, it's not allowed (and that's not just a moonfest rule ) that goes for any prop... if it is putting yourself or others at risk, no... like a candle can be a dangerous thing if you put it in amoung the dry grass on the cliff... but of corse you're not going to do that... and of corse I'm not going to band all candles just because someone *could*

anyway... I'm really over all this

can we just go on having a lovely gathering as we do every month and have done for the last nine years?

By sparkley poi I mean steel wool or cage poi. I always assumed it'd be ok as long as you find space for it- didn't think it's be a problem given how much beach space there is which is usually empty anyway..

Would be lovely to have a Elke and Bec moonfest here. All that lovely energy in the west

Steel wool at our meets often involves dodging sparks and the public do like to try walk through so you need good spotters or a really good choice of spots.

Is it the Truth?

Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Elke, I wasnt puting my question up to stir you up, rather to clarify what is considered too unsafe for Moonfest, or at least what could lead others with less appreciation of the safety requirements for dangerous fire play to cause accidents. My aim is to not bring something along that will start an arms race for the biggest and most dangerous fire toy, or get you in trouble with the council, and asking in advance prevents problems getting off the ground. If doing wicked deeds was my mission I would be in jail by now for breaching most of the existing laws related to pyrotecnics and public spaces, and I would probably even be regarded as persona non grata at Burliegh on a Sunday night, let alone a respectable gathering like moonfest.

My actions confirm this, The only rule Ive broken has been firewalking on the beach. Persons other than myself lit that fire with no intent to firewalk on it, and it was being stoked for over half an hour in full veiw of all the moonfest organisers before anyone said to stop stoking it (not to imeadeatly put it out) so I assumed that rule wasnt taken to seriously, in a similar way to the rule on alcohol not being strictly enforced of late unless drunkenness is detected. I havent done it again since then.



Sorry if I gave you a different impression, but I do actually like moonfest in its current form.



While most people would agree I am a cave man when it comes to the tact and charm I exude when I try and seduce women, or at least a peak oil aware semi vegetarian highly frugal 20th century version of john the baptist, rest assured that that big heavy club thing of mine is there to spin with, not to hit women over the head and take them back to my cave. I wont say the lizard thing again either, I seem to be getting a shaft off everyone Ive told it to recently, even people that know I have the tact and charm of alexander downer. Ive deleted "The Lizard Thing" out of my last post so it will forever more remain protected as secret mens business to be spoken of only at bucks nights and the like.



If I am inadvertantly gaining a reputation as a trouble maker , public nuicence ,or general pariah at moonfest or anywere else please let me know straight away so I can cease doing whatever it is before its to late. I wouldnt want the moonfest after I depart to check out land in NZ to be remembered as a celebration of my riddence from brisbane , I would prefere nobody even noticed I was not there for many months, (and hopefully not seen forever if I find what I am looking for on the big trip).

Does anyone want up to 13 black square 20L metho drums to put fuel or non drinkable camping water ,etc in. They have metho residue so have to be washed first, and may also have been used for metho contaminated with an unknown substance.
They will probably swell and leak at the lid slightly with D60 like the 5L Gooble fuel bottle as they are polyethylene, and I dont know if they are the antistatic plastic needed for shellite, petrol, etc( It is important, I have personally seen a spark at least 25mm long inside a milk bottle I was filling with petrol, but luckily it did not light). They also make good containers if you cut them in half.

These are free, and I would prefer someone to take the lot from my place at Oxley

Aparently fuel safe containers have a special antistatic coating inside, or may even be a slightly conductive plastic like the rubber used in some fuel and air hoses , but I dont know the details of what it is or how it works. Acording to a physics teacher I had at school there were quite a few cases of static ignighting fuel when plastic bottles and jerry cans first came out, hence specific fuel approved containers. There is also a fluridated polyethylene that is ment to be much less permiable to petrol, used in red Nalgene fuel bottles.



Having personally seen a 25mm or longer bright blue spark occur about 1994 while filling a 2L polyethylene milk bottle with petrol, I would NEVER EVER EVER fill a container other than a non internally painted aproved metal jerry can ( many metal drums have a varnish layer that may insulate the metal) or a plastic fuel container specifically approved for petrol.



As you would expect I was very nervous about emptying out the bottle I had just filled, but becuase this was part of a far more dangerous activity I cant discuss on a public forum I just made sure I volunteered to fill and conect up an undisclosed device with the petrol from the plastic milk bottles while eveyone else waited at the safe ignition point, telling them it was just standard practice that only 1 person should do that part of the job. I think I even got to pour in the fuel with nobody around but its too long ago to remember. I poured it in with absolute minimal agitation and did not see another spark. I told my fellow first time novice observers and highly experienced assistant the full story later on, but only once this knowledge would not cause them to panic or loose concentration and make even more danger for us all.



I must have filled at least a few hundred plastic bottles up like that in the past , but most were done in the day so maybey I just never saw the sparks. I also never saw any sparks emptying them at night though, so mayby I am just one very lucky person. (I am, but thats another tale that involved pure neglegence on my part and involved a bottle of metho exploding when I thought I was pouring kero into a groove in the dirt leading into a lit fire. Being sprayed with burning metho so hard that it did not get time to light, having your vision go blured and runing for your life to a tap when you know you are covered in metho and partly on fire is not fun at all).



These are 2 experiences I am most happy to share with as many people as possilbe, because fuel vapour ignighting in a container with fuel in it is not just a little pop like lighting an empty bottle, it is a very violent ejection and you wont be able to hold the container still if it happens, and burning fuel is going to be thown around at least 3 M, and a jet may come out in excess of 6 M long. If there was a second chance with this type of acident I think I' ve already used it up for you with my escape from the metho explosion.



If reading this is making you want to give up fire twirling, the good news is that D60 is THEORETICALLY not ment to produce enough vapour to be ignightable below something around 60-65C. That said I would still not swill it round and round inside a soft drink bottle and then pour it straight into a metal tin on the ground, pour it after you have opened it for a few seconds with minimal turbulence durring the transfer . (Just in case it was contaminated when you got it). There are realy complex proceedures used to refuel aircraft and transfer large amounts of fuel that involve eathing and connecting wires, but for the fuels (hopefully) used by most fire twirlers I dont think there is too much to worry about when the fuel is cold. I would still treat hot fuel with the same respect as petrol or shellite as this can ignight without a wick.

& people used to wonder why us poor ole servo attendants would tell them to sod off if they tried to fill up milk bottles?! it's not just the spark - the plastic will degrade a lot faster...so you'll end up with petrol everywhere!! in my day as a servo chick i used to have so many arguments with customers over this issue! one guy chucked a tantrum & actually threw his bottles (one juice bottle, one milk bottle) at the shop...

...just thought the simple moonfest gathering info may have been lost in all this very important and interesting (but slightly off topic for the events section) safety talk... As fire safety goes much further than just moonfest anyhow... perhaps people from the other side of the world would see that moonfest is just a brizzy event will not come in here and miss the info that they were wanting to find about fuel and plastic botles and different fire props etc.
There are numerous threads about safety ... fuels... different fire toys...burns... first aid.... etc ... perhaps do a search and post in these threads so that the info goes further to people who are looking for that spacific information... as people generally come to the events section for info about the event and generally organizing get togethers/events/performances/gatherings ... This very imformative info about safety will get out to more people if it's posted in the threads that are already on the topic of safety etc. Or perhaps start your own thread if it's more specific to what is already on the board. cheers

So for anyone visiting the Moonfest Thread for the first time.... hi welcome! all the moonfest dates for the year are in the first post of this thread We gather every full moon from Dusk... or before if you want to have a play and picnic in the park while it's still sunny and there are sparkles on the water.:*

This month moonfest carries on from the good friday Yacht race doodahs all part of the Bluewater Festival (check the thread on Bayfire for more info about that) ... with sand sculpting compertitions, kids rides, market stalls and not to mention boats... lots of boats heheheh (the brisbane to gladstone yacht race starts from the peir at 11am) All these activities will be wrapping up at about 4pm.... right about the time all us moonfesties like to come out

So bring along all your toys and instruments for a jam and twirl and dance in the candle circle*:.

Hey, Elke... I know the moonfest site @ msn mentions it, but do many drummers usually turn up? I have a couple djembes, but zero idea what to do with them...

Might even bring along a couple of my kids... sounds like they'd have a ball...

There's quite a few drummers usually, and dancers, specially when the weather is fine. Some quite good ones, and assorted people having a go. If you want to learn to play djembe, there's a good guy in Brisbane who can teach you. He's my flatmate and I will PM you his mobile number. When playing loud drums like djembes, it's usually a community service to know a bit what to do with them



And yeah it's great for kids.. beach, sand, space, people enjoying themselves, drug/alcohol free...

Just remind them not to go out amongst the spinners... people spinning can't always see/hear/spot/avoid kids, specially if the kids come up behind them...

and yes bring along your drums and your kids it's totally a friendly casual gathering (drug and alcohol free) and yep drummers usually gather round the candle circle...:* from beginners tapping away to the beat to high energy groovers ... so whatever level of drumming you have you are most welcome ... and loads of dancers jump in the circle and have a boogey

there is a great space for the fire twirlers to spin all together, in there own space away from the main crowd ... so just let your kiddies know not to wander through that space ...like gabe said it's sometime hard to see outside the swirl of flames around you when you are spinning... so it's a good idea to keep a good distance from people spinning fire

ok, ive consulted the pixie, and we've come up with a plan..

i arrive in byron bay on wednesday. later that night, or afternoon, i *borrow* a cannoe, and drag it to the beach. i find a dolphin for a companion and then begin paddling my way to brisbane, arriving in perfect timing to moonfests begining.
