Hiya, same here! I have been trying to spin for about three months and i would say just get some poi that are like tennis balls, they don't hurt as much and you wont be so scared of knocking yourself out!

When I started, I made my own practice poi with tennis balls (seems to be a common theme here) and bungee cords. They seem to work pretty well as long as you don't go too fast. I just made a little cut in the tennis ball, and then tied the end of the bungee cord (without hook of course) and shoved it into the tennis ball. It's pretty easy.

You can also get cool little mouse poi I think they are called and they are like bean bags and hurt even less than tennis balls when they hit ya!
