The chick that hatched last time was sickly and died. I know that there is nothing that we could have done differently but i still feel bad. I grew up on a farm and an used to seeing this kind of stuff all the time but this is different because these are our first chicks. 
thanks for the info, i'll definitely go look into it. i used to be really up to date with laying conditions and all that sort of thing, but it was a good 10 years ago now, things are likely to have changed somewhat since then. i wasn't questioning whether eating unfertiliesed eggs was vegetarian friendly, but wondering whether free range chickens are more likely to become accidentally fertilised, and collected so they don't have the chance to grow. i often see specks of blood in eggs, and i'm never sure if this is the beginnings of a foetus.
