hey yeah im a zoologist-turned-graphics person too...i do architectural rendering and other cad stuff and maybe in theory some landscape design thats bird friendly if ever anyone would ask for that. mostly im doing this since i somehow think that the computer skills will get me back to australia faster than the biology ones since im a birder and not something useful like a biochemist. and i do a little biological illustration on the side which maybe someday i will persue more seriously. Sweet, there's a vast array of professions here...i myself have started a computer graphic design course which im loving........so i mooch in front of a computer every day......*yay* Im going to get into the music industry and performing arts GD......one day!I quit high school last year, not my scene, thank god i left............

I have done alot of things in my life,,from boat captian, to now skate shop owner,, but most of the time I was a mechanic,jack of all trades master at some,, I can fix anything, with a little head scratching,, I guess you could say Im one of the last honest dudes who don't rip people off,, I like the smiles on peoples faces,, when I dont even charge them

I'm gonna add to the amount of students on the board ...i'm in the final month of a degree in Computing and Philosophy, (yep, i know, strange combo, they kinda fit together, and i had my reasons for taking them together) and i have never worked so hard in all my life!occasionally, when the student loan runs out i get myself employed in a local pub, and i worked in Holborn, London for a while for an Internet Company (mainly on R&D, which was good fun (can't have been real work i hear you say!).Hmm, thats a question i'd like to know the answer to.. How many of you actually enjoy your job, really? I'm currently having a debate with my boyf about people and enjoying jobs???

Chloe...I love my job and have found in the past that if I don't like it I don't last. Agricultural journalist........Freelance TV presenter (currently also for an agricultural show)......Part of a team (my mom's the other part) presenting courses to aspiring drama teachers on how to teach drama.....Freelance drama teacher (ag, little things like teaching the kids how to do mime etc. during school holidays).......Freelance radio presenter (very *free*lance)....Yeah, that's 'bout it.......I'm happy though.------------------*WC*

wow, wildchild, what do you write for? i just moved to this farm, and am dying for ag sources!i pay the bills by working on software (www.atg.com) but really what i *do* is follow my dreams. currently that means that i am living on and managing a 150-acre farm which is definitely more than i can handle, but there ya go. there's so much work to do, but i'm hoping that in addition to the farm producing most of the hay for the valley's animals (dairy cattle) and a significant amount of (ecologically managed) lumber, within the next few years i'll be able to grow all of our own produce and we'll have a respectable horse farm going...whoever said "one thing at a time" was definitely NOT a farmer!

Chloe, IMHO the majority of people either don't like their jobs or are indifferent (probably people on this BB are not a representative sample)...there's nothing much that can be done about it either since there are a number of tasks that have to be carried out if we are to have the necessary resources for survival; if you are one of the lucky ones who enjoys doing something that happens to be beneficial for the society then you'll be happy and will find a job you enjoy - if not you go on and find a job you hate less than the others and get the necessary money you need and then keep all the things that interest you but can't be used to earn a living as hobbies...btw i didn't realize you were studying computing and philosophy; i though you did something along the lines of politics and philosophy...hmmmm does that mean that now i have to change the image of you that i have formed in my mind??? just pulling your leg... happy swinging,Simos

ykat:I write for a publication that goes out fortnightly - Agricultural News.....We cover a broad spectrum of agric stuff - from legislature to small-scale farmer activities.I will be more than happy to get u the info you're looking for. I studied drama......therefore, starting out in the agricultural field three years ago was hectic for me. I'm a fire-fairie gypsy at the moment... currently in Aotearoa, about to go off fruit picking, which I have done in Canada one season many moons ago. I do whatever I can, and if I dont like it I leave and find something else to do.. My last job in Victoria was my favoritest yet, it was working as a custodian for a big tourist garden, but I really liked it cuz of the people I worked with and the garden itself is a magical place... I like to be in magical places...Work by day, spin flames by night... Fire, earth, water, air power to you all!!! FFB

Simos, i think you are probably right. The majority of people i have met do seem to view thier job as a means to make money, thier time is a commodity to use. But saying that, i have also met alot of people that do enjoy what they are doing, and will rarely do anything they don't. I don't think anymore that a job is for life, more that people try lots of diff things out until they find what suits them. I have an idealistic image in my mind, in which everyone enjoys the work they do, and realises and fulfills themselves in that work.. i think i have been reading too much marx!!! I spose there are just too many people for everyone to find a job they enjoy.I'm just hoping i can find a job that satisfys me, and that i can express myself through. I have ideas. And.. yeh, computing and philosophy.. not politics I was going to do straight philosophy, but figured i would be slightly more employable with computing as well.and its all over very soon... last essay to write on thurs!! But i have tonsilitas and i can;t be arsed. and i'm going to america on sun', and thats all i can think about.Chloe

nice to see what everyone is doing....being new to the board its kewl to see the familar names and know how our lives are all different but the same i live outside of houston, tx and currently work nite shifts at an animal emergency clinic. i love it, very gratifying but the people are just stoopid sometime. this gives me lots of time to spin..i can watch myself in the windows at work lol....on the side i give my fiancee a hard time i have been apart from him for 5 months and finally got him here from new zealand now we just have to fight the immigration folks to get him to stay. i play in the SCA as well and belong to a tribe of belly dancers. we hope to integrate poi into our dancing thanks for the wonderful website. mira

If you haven't already guessed I'm a cattle farmer. I have a farm (about 200 Hectares) in NorthWest province ...What's really funny is that I find eating animals morally objectionable and I'm allergic to grass( lawn ) !! Some farmer, eh ?Hoping to establish the place as a Permaculture Training Facility to free us from the oppressive yoke (ie. debt) that the "first world" has imposed on us ... (just think: who grows your fruit, where does your gold/uranium come from, where do you send your doctors to study ? What do you give us in return ? Machine guns, missiles and movies - shame on you !!).I love my job - it makes me feel valuable. If I.T., lawyers, and salesmen where all to disappear us farmers would still be here. NOT the other way around.Bit of a personal gripe here if you didn't pick it up, but according to the latest figures(available) a farmer gets murdered every 3 days here in ZA. howdy folkshave had much of a chance as of late to spin or even check out this sitecan you guess whymy day job or as it is right now my 20 hour a day joball is good thoughright now i am in my second year of being a self-employed food service consultantie: when you want to open a restaurant or baror just want someone to come in and trouble shoot for you in you restaraunt im the guy you callas we speak i am about to open my third and most impressive project to dateit is a 175 seat italian restaurnt with a bakery with retail space and wholesale cappacity we also have on site a wine seller containiing over 10 000 bottlesi loooooove my day job even though it consumes almost 110% of my timealthough i do admit these days when i take a break during the baker shift i slip out into the parking lot slide into some coveralls so as to not blacken my whitesand fire upthen its back to the grindin the future i hope to have enough time to consentrate on writing for i would really like to move more into food journalism and less in the cooking construction businessany of you pro Writers have any tips for an illiterate wannabeallright allrightim supossed to be spending this time away from work so ill shut up nowas you can tell i never tire of ranting on my jobso longjessejames

well guys, im a boreing kinda pirsn methinks.i have no job at the moment, i used to work as a storman in a luggage shop in the city.but that was only short time. im a bartendera lil bit of a coctailmonkey actuley, but im not behind a bar at the moment. my first and formost thing tho is acting, im also an actor, im doing Les Miserables at the moment and im auditioning for hair this sunday so im always busy either looking for work either behind a bar or in another acting or fire job....as i said, kinda boreing reely ------------------ladies and gentelmen take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice...

I used to work at a strip club and so I guess this is why I have to ask.. from my observations it appears there is often dozens of dancers getting funky with their pole throughout a night.It always screamed herpes city or miscallaneous bacteriaville to me. And that's only cause I saw multiple girls *REALLY* showing their enthusiasm on the pole - I'm assuming it's the same everywhere around the world in this industry. Jesse, assuming(pardon me if I'm wrong) you are a stripper who strips right off - how do you deal with that stuff? And just so you know I think combining fire and exotic dancing is definitely a good money-maker - do you do flame to body transfers and stuff? And how do you strip while doing poi if your hands are full? (Assuming again that you do use poi.)I am genuinely curious =)Subsequently, I left that job cause after work one night I got chased (literally) home at 4.30 am by a club-goer in his car demanding a lap dance and not taking no for an answer.

Splat/Bish/all curious parties:I don't work in a completely bare club. In Pittsburgh, in any club where alcohol is served, entertainers must wear T-Bar's and pasties, thus I'm much less worried about the whole pole=huge-incubator-for-god-only-knows-what issue. In addition to which, our club pushes us to perform as ladies and atheletes, rather than ... well my neighbor's hyper male poodle comes readily to mind here... There are strict rules about certain parts of us not being allowed to touch ANYTHING. No grinding on the pole/your own hand/floor/customers/other girls. To put it crassly. (Malcom's going to yell at me for attracting the wrong types of people to this site if I'm not extremely careful with my verbage here...) Y'all get my meaning I'm sure. The club is really trying to push an upscale atmosphere where businessmen can bring female clients as well as male, and not have them feel uncomfortable. As for your unfortunate insident, Splat, I'm sorry that happened. Scary. The security at our club is extremely tight. At night, we are not allowed to leave until our well lit parking lot is completely cleared of customers, and the valet have moved all our cars the the door (Thus ensuring that no one is inside or underneath.). In my case, though, I worry even less, because my SO comes to pick me up. But were I worried about something while I were alone, I would merely have to return to the club (or call if I have my cell) and ask our limo driver, Zac, for an escort home. It is unfortunate that there is a reason for all this security at our club, other than the fact that the owner of our club cares about his employees. One of our dancers was killed about 3 years ago by a man who followed her as she left the club. (No one ever went to trial, however it is heavily supposed that it was an ex of hers rather than a customer of the club. There were never any repeat occurrences to suggest any "serial" activity.)My isn't this a dark line of thought? Anyway, hands down, my club is the best to work in or around Pittsburgh for all the above reasons. Bish - I made more reference to your comment in the "What has it done for you" thread...

Oops... And Splat, I'm just now confident enough to start doing flame transfers etc. (I've had to teach my self, so I've been taking it s-l-o-w.) I don't have a show put together yet, because I don't feel I have enough interesting moves for 6 minutes of continuous and interesting choreography. For now, I stick to my poi leather pants and a bikini top for the first song of the set... It gets everyone's attention... Then I put the fire down (I've found that people are hesitant to tip a girl who's playing with fire...) the clothes come off (so to speak) and the pole work commences... As (hopefully) does the tipping... Then sometimes, just as the crowd thinks I'm done, after the stage has gone dark, I'll light up the room one last time with a blast...Just for the sake of experimentation, I checked with regular poi to see if I could maintain a spin while undressing... The top's no problem... But I have trouble peeling off leather pants gracefully when I'm NOT distracted...

Working for a huge multinational scientific journal publisher at the moment - they treat us right so i let them have the benefit of my time. It's odd that so many here seem to work in software, and yet so many of the other softies i work with look aghast if I mention the fire. Hey you guys I missed the other intro's so here i go I am 22 years old, and I was given the gift of fire spinning, four years ago, from my best friend as a graduation presant. (She learned it in Tai Land)I have grown up at Ski Resorts all of my life and now work at one in Alaska as the: Mountain Host Supervisor/ Shuttle Bus Manager at Alyeska Ski Resort (Im with Finn I live for Leasure, and Skiing )I ski all day, every day, and get paid to do it! I give free spinning classes every Thursday at the local Elementary School and help out with the racing program here. I spin at Partys, and Bars. People are tring to get me to a rave, but I don't know, I feel a bit out of place However, I get alot of ravers in my classes. What I have been doing the last 4 years is working in areas I would love to visit! (just my visit is a bit longer than others) I have a job op in AUS. next, but I want to make some $ to go to Message Therapy School in New Mexico. But for now I live to ski and spin!I know its a hard life, but someone's got to do it!

I'm new here so I've sort of missed the boat on replying to this one -- here goes:30. In the summer I work as a raft-guide, doing expedition-style multi-day trips on US designated "wild n' scenic" rivers. Essentially I live in a tent and grow webbed toes from May until September. I am also the system admin for the outfitter I work for. Poi and percussion are great ways to entertain guests at night under the stars on a sandy beach. In the winter, when I'm trying desperately to re-integrate with main-stream society (no pun intended), I end up serving some stint as an accountant. This I hate, but it's temporary until my outfitter goes world-wide and I'm rafting the southern hemisphere from October until April. Incidentally, I spent November in malcolm's neck of the woods for some kayaking. My 4th time to New Zealand -- i love it there!!!!alas, I've dribbled on long enough, must go bludgeon myself with me poi.

I do all my own stunts...
