I've been contemplating getting dreads for a while, but never really got around to it. I've always treated my hair with neglect and suddenly, I'm starting to get some pretty mad tangles -.- The rest of my family has started placing bets on how long it is before they start to become visible dreads rather than just large tangles of hair -.-
I'm not sure if I should comb them out and put in proper dreads, or let these ones come in...
I know the first option would most probably require alot of time, effort and pain on my part to get them out with out ripping out ALL my hair ^.^' But then again, if I'm gonna have dreads, I want them to look nice biggrin
My hair is about 8-10 inches long or so, but it's fairly curly, and tangles easily. It would be easy for me to do dreads either way, but I've heard all sorts of stories about bad looking natural dreads, even if it is the more 'natural' way of going about them.
Help me make the right choice HoP biggrin
If you want I can try and get a picture of my hair if that would help anyone out, I don't know how well the pictures in my gallery show it or not.

And it is possible to get dreads otu witho[ut ripping out your hair. My friend used up 2 bottles of conditioner in one night to try and get them out, you ahve to keep the conditioner in for about and hour and keeprunning yuor finh\gers through the dreads.
However to start dreads off, tie a lock or hair into three or four knots securely and just let your hair go.... Thats how you get dreads...heh heh i had dreads at the tender age of 9

I plan on using Dreadheadhq's dread kit over the march break, and getting a bunch of my friends to help.
I'm just wondering if there is any other possibilities other than dreads I should consider biggrin
I get huge knots from ponytails now...

Sorry Sakura Chan. but that is seriously not how you make dreadlocks.
I dreaded my hair while i was in grade ten and the back-combing method is what i used. it produced neat looking symmetrical dreads that were easy to take care of as long as i kept them waxed.

If anyone needs the proper instructions on dread making and care, just PM me.

By the way, i'm not dumping on you Sakura

Skell I had planned on using the backcombing method.
I've heard alot of good things about Dreadhead HQ, so I'm using them as a basis of information. THat's not to say I'm not looking elsewhere to make sure they aren't just making it all up.

do a search - because there are quite a few dread threads on HoP already with soooooo much useful discussion... hug

but failing that - my dreads were borne from not brushing my hair - simple as that - no products, no backcombing things, just straight no brushing. To keep them neat, you need to spend time separating them.

The only problem I guess with this method is that it isn't instantaneous, it doesn't happen overnight, the way the newfangled younger generation like everything to be, like, right now wink ubblol rolleyes

good luck - dreads rock

Ade, that's the way my hair has been going, but I don't think I could let them do that, especially now that I'm starting back up in martial arts (I took a 3 month break to fully recover from all the injuries and come back all nice and healthy). I need to use the over night method so that I can properly manage them so they don't get messed up during my grappling.

And I just tried talking to my mother about it. Although she always loved dreads up untill now, she got up in a storm when I told her I was gonna get them and huffed off -.-

Yay for dreads smile Mine are... 7 months now, I think *counts* Yep. The good dread thread (that I know of) on HoP is [Old link]. Definately full of helpful advice! I used that thread a lot when I was getting them... I used the backcombing method with Knottyboy wax... From then, a lot of maintenance, but since then, I've just been doing what feels right for the forming of the dreadles. Before it was lots of wax, little washing (with soap) then little wax, little washing, or littls wax, lots washing... I don't think they're too bad at all! Amazing how they feel now, compared to when they were first made. If I ever get a little down about having dreads (due to societal pressures and the such...) I just look at the pics right after I got them, and love them soo much more because of how far they've gone! Although sometimes I still wonder about going back to normal hair. Not that much though!!

In my photogallery and intro thread on HoP, you can see pics of my dreads if you want.. in the intro thread I posted what they were like first, and in my gallery is dyed/cut etc...

Another thing you really have to consider is work. I think that when I get back to Canada, and have to get a job, it'll be a bit difficult, because I have dreads. But that's life... sometimes it sucks! But if you're a student who needs money, keep in mind that people might not hire you because you have weird hair!!! It does happen, unfortunately.

Good luck in your decision/convincing the parents!

I'm a student who has a job currently, and I work in a kitchen around lots of food, so I wear a hairnet and a hat anyways.
At my other job (weekends in summertime) at my local renfest, I'm a manager and I wear a big floopy ren style hat, so it won't matter there either.
Also with my third job (warm weather during evenings) I umpire for local baseball and softball leagues (not bad money plus I choose all my own hours), and I wear a hat and a mask, so it won't be a problem there either, and if anyone gives me a hard time, I'll throw em out biggrin

well i have blonde really really curly hair and it is pretty long, like 5-6inches although you wouldnt be able to tell by looking at it. my hair goes into these really really bad knots all the time naturally. they look like dreds wen i dont wash my hair for a week, but then come up wen i wash it. if you just leave it and let it go into one huge dred then seperate them into smaller ones that does work, prob not recommended but thats wat i do. he he he.

Got my dreads in today smile

Took 10 hours, with much cookie making, juggling, spinning, messing around and movies scattered about in there.

They are nice and thick and I can't wait till they start to tighten up!

I put some beads 4-5 of the ones by the front of my face smile

Have gotten complimetns from various friends so far.

Am still thinking about how to tell the parentals ^.^'

That's the photobucket of the pictures that turned out ok.

I'm the one with the dreads who looks like a fool in half the photos.

My girlfriend is wearing the tank tops

and my best friend is in the hoody.
