I've looked at other posts and they talk about using flash paper for self lighting poi. I was wondering if it would be possible to dip the wick, then attach some flash paper to the bottom and light the wick at the top. The idea being that the flame slowly spreads down from the top (assuming a cold wick) reachs the flashpaper, there's a nice fireball so causing the wick to be lit completely.

I have no experience with flash paper so I was wondering if this was safe or even feasible

Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand and I can beat the world into submission.

Domino, I've used flash string...wrapped it around the wick and ran it along the chain to an ignitor I held in hand.

It worked OK, but I only tried it once. The lighting mechanism was a lighter, which felt clumsy. You don't want to just drop it, as stepping on it can be a hazard. I need to work on the idea a bit more and find a better ignition method.

I don't know that it would work to light parafin since it is a quick burn.

Brain...flash paper is a nifty little thing that magicians use...it's thin paper that, when ignited flashes bright, and burns to nothing....not even ash.

a friend of ours spun a few weeks ago with sparklers stuck through his wicks.

he lit the sparklers first and when they had burnt down, the wicks ignited themselves. from sparklers to big balls of flame.... 'twas very nice to watch smile

My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely smile

It won't fork. I used to be a magician and used flash paper with a lot of my tricks. It will give a nice fizzle but no fireball. You wanaa use blackpowder or something.

I think it depends on the fuel, laZy.

Faberge had decent experience with sparklers, though they get quite hot, and I had success with flash string. I was using colemans camp fuel, not parafin, though.

I can see Colemans lighting easily with flashpaper, or even a parafin/coleman mix. The naptha would light it all up.
