just noticed that yet another what music do you spin to thread has been locked in this... um department (sorry, net geek speak escapes me...)... and yes I know that is because people keep posting about it... I was just wondering really why people keep posting about it?? Anyone have any clue why everyone wants to know this in the first place?

I listen to music a lot, I also spin poi a lot. I listen to a lot of different music at different times too. These are two mutually exclusive events for me, occasionally they happen at the same time, that's all groovy, but i sure as hell couldn't generalize what kind of music i end up listening to whilst spinning...?

*cue thousands of people looking at me like I'm completely dense, and then probably groaning because it is loosely associated with the most frequently occuring thread on the board* but i just wondered WHY? i just don't get that that question is the most pressing question that people need answered and not, say, something like: "how do i know if i have concussion through hitting myself with poi?" or: "is anyone good with knots as I seem to have my poi wrapped around my neck?" or even: "how many elephants does it take to change a lightbulb?" (the answers to all of the above, may not be found by searching this forum... so visit your local library....)

and umm, if you're actually going to reply to this, - slightly random - thread, try to avoid actually stating what type of music you spin to, as I'm not really interested... and it will most likely get locked. biggrin

*wonders how many music forums feature the question - "what do you do whilst listening to music?"*

Here are some alternative questions, should anyone want to answer.

How do you get the smell of paraffin out of your clothes?

What do you eat after spinning?

What shoes do you wear while spinning? (If any)

How long are your poi?

There, I have done my best to add some different (I hope) questions to HOP.

First, I'm moving this to Social Chat as it's where it should be.

It's asked because it's a valid question for several reasons. People listen to music whilst spinning and what they listen to affects what their spinning.
Also it's a good, ice breaking social conversation starter.

What head protection do you were will spining? if any?

You can't avoid pain by fencing yourself from it.
Some times you need the help of others more than anything else
But you have to let them close enough to help......
People want to be needed, I found that out too

I don't spin poi. Does that mean I'm not allowed to listen to music?

sorry pardon, i just posted where i was when i thought of it, thanks Dom. and those reasons make perfect sense too, I may have made far too big a deal about it redface but i think i'm really just wondering why it seems that music and poi seem so linked, and commenting on the fact that it is almost the exact same phrasing of the question every time. I just thought it was kind of peculiar... as shown in subsequent posts, smile there are so many potential questions after all biggrin

what if we had a sticky about music? then, people would see that there is a 'everything music related' thread, and post all the questions in there.

I can very much see your point about the relevence of the (apparently) dreaded question. Primarily because there may not be a direct connection between poi and music for many people. Also, everyone spins for different reasons, to express various things and adopt different styles. That said, I kinda like the querie because for me the two are firmly intertwined (as are my poi too often for liking!) I listen to whatever music I please while spinning but I guesse it's nice to know what others find inspirational.

It's good to talk?

Much peace.

I've found that when juggling, different styles of music have led me into trying different styles of juggling - for example, drum and bass has a very different rhythm to techno, the beat is less regular, and so I found myself trying entirely different tricks to try and fit in with the music. After about fifteen minutes, I'd more-or-less taught myself a new trick. Nothing particularly special, but it was something I'd never thought to try before.

I've not really found the same with poi yet, but then I'm not very good with poi yet. I think as I get a wider reportoire of moves to play with, then I wouldn't be surprised to find things working in a similar way.

So far the majority of my time with poi has been spent in the park with no music, although I have spun at the start of clubs a few times, before it gets too crowded to carry on. As my leg is currently recovering from a bad break last year, I can't actually bounce around dancing with my poi the way I could when I first started playing with them last spring, so I guess I'll have to wait a while longer before I can get the maximum advantage from music while I spin...

hmm how interesting music lets youre body flow so you can get lost in the rhythm and let youre soul take you to new heights... But in response to Zim sure A=B and B=A and B=C and so on but what on earth equals D oh sweeeet jesus why is it always forgotten...*runs off and bangs head on a wall*

Yeay! another Vans afficianado! I've been wearing Vans almost exclusively for more than 23 years! Currently I wear my special edition old school pair that have flames on them when I am doing a casual show. I either spin barefoot or with really big black jack boots on when doing a more formal show, depending on which them the show has.
