Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

So I guess you are liking "Skinny legs and all"? I see you changed your siggie to be a quote from it.

yup - finished it last night - still think "even cowgirls get the blues" is Tom Robbins' best work, but "skinny legs and all" gets second place now, ahead of "another roadside attraction". but I rather liked the quote enough that I would have even changed my sig to it for a while even if I hadn't like the book so much.

I can't get into "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" to save my life, though I've been told you either love Tom Robbins, or his stuff falls flat. Perhaps he fell flat with me.

Solitude sometimes speaks to you, and you should listen.

actually, I'm in between - I dislike some of his work (villa incognito, still life with woodpecker) and I like others (the ones I mentioned. Although, when I do read him, I ALWAYS skip his paragraph long masterbations with words when he is trying to be all surreal describing something - I always hate that.

and to tell the truth, I didn't like the first part of "even cowgirls...". It takes a while to get into - like half the book, so I can understand you having put it down. the only reaon I got that far after writing off other books from him is that is was the only english language novel I had around at the time. That last part is worth the first part though.

actually, now that I think about it, I almost always dislike his writing style and usually think his characters are unrealistic and hard to identify with. I do generally like his stories lines and his philosophy though. it is the books of his that are thin on philosophy that I don't care for.

An interesting thing is, I've read his work pretty much at random, but I can tell which order he wrote them in more or less, since you can see certain philosophical thoughts are developed more in one than in another, etc...

What is psychology?- Looking for a black cat in a dark room. What is psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis is looking for a black cat in a dark room -- in which there is no cat -- but finding one anyway.

er... actually, I am reading "Middlesex" by Jeffery Eugenides - which is an increadibly good book about incest and a hermophrodite. It really doesn't have anything to do with pirates I'm afraid. (I'm not kidding though, the book is brilliant).

Actually, it was inspired by looking at my shoes, which happen to be a pair of vans with checkered jolly rogers on them.

Interesting! I've just finished "Grift Sense" by James Swain. And part way through "The Kasidah of Haji Abdul El Yezdi", translated by Sir Richard Burton.
