Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

well, I am going to try, but it isn't looking promising right now. If I can find a really cheap airfare, then maybe if things go really smoothly financially and I find a cheap apartment in Berlin too.

hey all, I'm back from my Xmas holiday trip 'round southern Africa with Spritie. It was awesome! The coast of Mozambique is amazing and essentially undiscovered by tourists. Not that access is easy, but it is well worth the effort - beleive me. The roads were poor enough that we seriously considered not going as far north as our initial plans, but we finally did forge on to Vilankulo. I'm glad we did, as the trip from there out to the offshore islands in a sailing dhow was... well, I am going to remember it fondly for the rest of my life.

Another highlight of the trip was visiting Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. It is so unreal there that you hardly recognize that you are actually experiencing it and aren't watching a movie or dreaming or something. We did a full day white water rafting trip down the Zambizie river starting just below the falls (!!!) which was increadible. The Zambizie is one of the world's premiere white water rivers. That was one of the best days I've had in I can't remember how long. If Zimbabwe has serious troubles, Victoria Falls seems to be unaffected by them. The place seemed idyllic.

Overall, Spritie and I were blessed by good fortune and generally good weather. A serious monsoon hit Madagascar, which meant cooler than normal weather for us, but with the disadvantage that our scuba dive trip to see manta rays and whale sharks was cancelled. mad

We had a good spin on New Years Eve with fire people from the Cape Town area at the Vortex new year's party. Cape Town is famous for its outdoor trance parties, and this one did not dissapoint. cool On the down side, it was frigging cold out that night despite it being the middle of summer (I think I had every article of clothing on that I had packed for the trip).

But sadly the trip is over now, and so is my time living on the dark continent. I have about 40 hours left in before my flight for Berlin departs. in 3 days time, I will be a resident of Germany instead of South Africa. Hopefully I'll be attending my first German poi practice gathering only 11 hours after I arrive there (if I have the energy).

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great holiday season.

I'll ease more fully back into HoP when I get to Germany. See you all then. beerchug

I'm sure he will! If we can find a cafe in the middle of nowhere Mozambique (so what if there wasn't enough power in the town that day to actually operate the computer in this lady's house), I'm sure he'll have no problem finding some in a real city.

I just hope the weather upon his arrival isn't as dreary as weather.com is making it out to be - going from 90+ degrees with total sunshine to below 32 with freezing rain certainly does not sound like fun to me.

yea, it is a bit chilly here, but that´s ok since it is warm inside! Much better than winter in South Africa where you can´t get away from the cold. my German is enough to get me by, but fewer people here speak english than i anticipated (I´m working in what used to be east germany - they tend to speak russian better than english).

met a few of the berlin fire performers a couple nights ago. they are pretty cool and a looking forward to getting to know them.

not much else of interest I guess... just getting settled and trying to figure out what part of town I want to live in.

I've noticed that about Europe. The larger countries tend to have a lot of people who don't speak English. Especially if the national language is one of the major international languates (German, French, Spanish). In fact, you'll find a lot more people who speak English in Mexico than in Spain because Mexico borders the U.S. Spain borders France (and the Spanish, like everyone else, hate the French and French hate the Spanish just as much as they hate everyone else ubblol ) and Portugal, where they claim to speak a language called "Portugese," except that it's just a strange dialect of Spanish. ubblol

So since most Spaniards have little contact with English-speakers, most forget how to speak it after they finish school. Unless, of course, they live on the Costa del Sol and come in contact with Brits all the time.
