Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

yeah, I've killed a couple light bulbs, but this was the first total lamp desruction of my poi spinning career - it was a total write off! And here I bought that one specifically because I thought it would stand up pretty well to getting hit with poi! rolleyes

and I was spinning sock poi too!

oh yeah, forgot to mention that, after 4.5 years of spinning (it was bound to happen someday), I finally took out my first ceiling lamp yesterday! It really shattered - I don't think there was any peices of glass larger then about 1 cm square - and they were all over the room!

*sticks out hand to vanize*

well done dude

clap clap clap

let me see where i'm at now......

....1 glass lampshade.... the whole thing, like yours, not a single fragment of glass bigger than 1cm after impact
.... 4 or 5 lightbulbs
.... paper & wire lampshade (japanese thingy)... didn't last a week
.... disco ball.... had to be removed when all the little mirrors started falling off.... it's no longer round either.... frown

i now live in the dark biggrin

luckily this one was mine, so I didn't have to feel bad. I was barefoot though, so you should have seen my silly tip-toe dance I had to do to get out of the room and to the broom!

guacamole is easy to make most anywhere if you can get avacados. you just have to be really picky about picking the avos.

you can't get good mexican in berlin either - though there is one place here that is acceptable. Stangely I have found two places in Austria with very good mexican food (one in Vienna, the other in Salzberg), but those are the only two in all of Europe I have discovered.

but that is ok, because I make my own - as long as people like my sister and Spritie keep me stocked with some key ingredients I can't get here, and tortillas are available (I get mine from a guy from LA who has a taco stand in the train station near my apartment).

that's a hard core mexican fetish you got going on the V!

George made some guacamole a few weeks ago, it was lovely and she was very fussy picking out avacados. i think she said they have to be very soft, or was it hard? shrug

Let's relight this forum ubblove

the avos have to be soft to the touch (softer than the avos you might buy for a salad), but not squishy. also shake them - if you can feel the seed rattling, then don't buy it.

the best avos for guacamole are the black ones with the really bumpy skin, but these do not travel as well as the green ones (which are larger too) and so you rarely see them in europe. when selecting the green ones, get the darker green ones that do not have (or have very few and very small) black spots.

when you grow up in texas, you are a serious mexican-food-aholic (Spritie may disagree, but she doesn't even like chocolate, so clearly her opinion is null and void)

what about gaucamole? - I know some people who can't eat avos but are fine with gauc (probably something to do with it being all squished up and having loads of lemon juice in it). frankly I'm not a huge fan of avos strait, but I can't live without my regular guacamole fix!

I think it has something to do with the fat content. If I eat too much fatty food it makes me feel really ill. Cream cakes make me dizzy if I eat all the cream!

I have loads of odd food allergies. I can't drink beer, I have an intolerance to wheat, fat make me feel light headed and odd, I'm a vegetarian but at times when I have eaten meat accidentally without knowing I get the same kind of odd feeling as I get if I eat fatty foods. What can I say..... I'm just hard to feed! ubblol

BTW, I am slow I guess, but I just noticed you are (or at least claimed to be in another thread) 37... would have never realized on my own, or even from your pics (not that they are terribly revealing in that way...), that you are 2 years older than me!

Maybe thats because we don't act the way people think we should for our age. I've never been sure just what is the right way for someone my age to behave so I don't try. I just be me and if people don't like it..... well I don't let it worry me ubblol
