When we were having some trouble down by the Seine trying to light up the poi with a disposable lighter, I really missed not having a windproof one.

Now, I'm looking at zippos and butanes and wondering what makes the most sense.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks!

I find it easier for lighting and relighting to have something burning constantly to just hold the poi over. Candles are ok when not windy, when windy just get a small metal (or thick glass) container (like ash tray sized) with some paraffin soaked tissue in it (and a bit more paraffin for goo measure) and light up. It'll burn for over an hour and survive pretty damn strong wind.

hummmm, i like my pressurized butan lighter, very fun,a nd it really cant be blown out, its a windmill if you want to know the brand name...

oh, and speaking of fun toys!!!!

my friend has a lighter called a blast match, which is basically a spring loaded flint and steel that sends out a shower of sparks when the flint is depressed, very fun, and it will light kero and colemans lamp fuel...

Agree with Flid. I have a smudge-pot that I use for lighting--it's similar to a tiki torch, but in a weighted sphere, not on a long stalk.

I also have a Colibri lighter (it was a gift). Ridiculously expensive, but really windproof and powerful--it's like have a pocket-size welding torch.

I'd say butane torch first, then Zippo.

A really neat way to light poi or staff with your new lighter (not butane, too hot) is to put on fire retardant gloves, put a small amount of fuel on the palms of the gloves and put a lighter in one hand as well. Light the lighter and hold your hands together to set them both alight. When poi/staff is lit, put your hands together to snuff out the flame. Might not be the best idea with a disposable due to the possiblity of exploding, however small it may be since you're not on fire very long.

there are a few very flashy zippo tricks (which are also very hard and would take a lot of time to learn) that could really spruce up the beginning of a routine.

Ones like this [url[https://zippotricks.com/submitted_tricks/Hard_Tricks/level3_32/level3_32.html[/url]

are pretty visible from a distance to.

That lighter is certainly neat and classy looking.

But really it's just a glorified BBQ lighter.

We have a fantastic Bernz-o-matic propane torch. That baby will light anything in any wind conditions. Yes, it's a bit bulky with the propane tank on the bottom, but the one hit trigger thing is way cool.

See the website here.

Bought. About $12 from Walmart. Well worth it. One fillup with lamp oil will probably burn for about 12 hours. Nobody has to hunt for a lighter to get lighted, and it never blows out in the wind.

The obvious next question is: what is it called? Hehe. I went out to Wally World yesterday, but didn't see quite what I was looking for. Do ya remember if it was in the candle and smell good foof section? Or the gardening section? They've seem to have moved all the gardening stuff and replaced it with Christmas stuff. Our Wally World is one of those that has "everything except the thing you're looking for".

Nevermind! I found something that'll work just as well. Two little stone torches for a patio/garden. Were on sale for $5 even!

Garden section, sorry. I don't know what the product name is, I just refer to it generically as a smudge pot. It looks like a stainless-steel bomb about the size of a bowling ball with a black iron wart on top.

Yet you feel comfortable swinging balls of fire around. How odd..........

Actually what I'm thinking of may be a bit diffirent, but I had a friend who had a propane torch that basicly equated to a large wind proof candle flame. I think it was designed to be some sort of camping heater, but it works really well for a constant flame for every one to light off of at gatherings. It was about a liter size propane tank with a sort of satelite looking thing to sheild the flame. Works brilliantly.

They are very nice for camping or as a backup incase of power outage. They are pretty cheap to.

It might be a bit large to carry around with the rest of my spinning kit, but it'd be a hell of a lot easier to light my poi with than my normal zippo since I could just leave it lit on the floor.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I've used trigger start propane torches, they're handy but awkward to lug around... They'll light steel wool no problem without any need to for any sort of fuel spike..

Also used everything from candles to matches to bonfires.. fire is fire

I use a little refillable butane welding torch... Not too big (handheld) and hot enough to light anything in a matter of seconds.

Had to get me dad to buy it for me as I'm still underage. biggrin

Works better than anything I've used up 'til now, and I still haven't found anything wrong with it...

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."
