if i was making my own poi's how shud i construct the wick so that while burning i get the biggest flames?

Loose cathedral (square) wicks. The flame will be exposed to more air, therefore giving it more oxygen making the fuel burn bigger and faster.

but big also means really slow, and that takes getting used to, espically if you have just tennis balls or glostix something of the like before.
I made my wicks with 4" kevlar (available here) and 6 feet of it on each wick and made it up pretty loosely. Just a warning though, the looser you go, the more wear your wicks will suffer. I got mine in Dec of 2001 and theey are starting to show a few signs of wear, nothing i'm worrying about yet though.
