Splendour/Pleasure
Splendour/Pleasure takes its inspiration from Alfonso Lingis’ writings on the autoerotic effect of the ritual dances, colourful displays and the squandering of excess forces in the courtship of North American Sage Grouse, European Knights and contemporary performance art practices. It constitutes a response to David Attenboroughs documentary on the aesthetic sensibility of bower birds in courtship and Lingis’ writings on axiological discourse ‘the beautiful words beautify, the noble words ennoble’. Avoiding to a large degree all representational and narrative structures, the performance is a playful investigation into the erotic and autoerotic nature of being on display in contemporary theatre: a celebration of the pleasure of performance.
