What is the wing speed of an unladen swallow? Although a definitive answer would of course require further measurements, published species-wide averages of wing length and body mass, initial Strouhal estimates based on those averages and cross-species comparisons, the Lund wind tunnel study of birds flying at a range of speeds, and revised Strouhal numbers based on that study all lead me to estimate that the average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles an hour. https://www.style.org/unladenswallow/

Gidg and Burda,

Gidg.... next time I am in Portland you will need to take me out to see the backwards flying swallows... Or share some of those scrips you are on... hehe.

BurdaA... I do some euro period sword work from time to time and love the use of actual fencing masters names. It would have been better if he had not just asigned random info to each style... but hey not bad for a book or movie. I find that Tipo cancels out Capiferro given the rough terrain. Provided you are a master at Tippo, which I am. ( ok, so I am not a master of Tipo).

Yummy! Cookies! *gobble*

Marc, you've been to Portland? Like Oregon? Not Maine but Oregon? We get so few visitors ... at least from HoP.

Ula ka leke maka? Red Christmas? Maybe ke'oke'o kalikimaka?

*walks away singing* mele kalikimaka is the thing to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day. That's this island greeting that ...

Gidg,

My brother lives up in that area, in one of the river valleys right on the Oregon / Washington border.

I think I mixed up my language memory there. I speak a tiny little bit of fourteen different languages. This probably gets me in more trouble than does me any good. I was trying to say " wider is better " but that darned christmas song stuck in my head. lol. I usually ending saying something like " like santa is wider" and then I don't get any christmas gifts.

Barjedi,

I was not aware of them being listed as technically perfect stage swordfights. That is awsome. I grew up in a area (1000 oaks California) where instead of baseball we got together at the local fort in Wildwood park for bamboo or padded swordfights. We had up to as many as 70 people at a given time though the core group was twenty or so. We would fight as often as three times a week though friday nights where the most active. sometime we would go from four in the afternoon till four in the morning.

All my formal training came later under Duris Dijon, an old french fencing master. He pass on nearly a decade and a half ago. I feel him roll over in his grave everytime I ballon fence or for that matter attemp a lunge. He gave up on me ever learning to lung and taught me to flesh instead. All good, till they outlawed the running attack in sabre.

At some point I will need to learn some theatrical swordwork. the real thing tends to be to boring for most audiences. I remember a fight between myself and a friend bearcat. Neither of us moved until we had our finish in our heads, then Pop! it was over... maybe two or three minutes of intense focus followed by half a second of motion and counter. It was a great match and we both enjoyed it but it would certainly not make for a good stage performance. I am in MN now and have alot of good resources to pull from so I should get on that sometime soon.

What prop do you use for your lightsaber fight choerography?

because of firestaff i use a darth maul for a lot of work, but my fav, as far as heft and balance, is the master replicas obi-wan... then i have a custom one off saber that has good balance... all have 36 inch polycarb blades

spinning the darth maul can be a lot like glow staffing, except the weight is concentrated in the "grip area"... the saber hilt, which can make it a bit hard to get going

My favorite practice weapon is the japaneese bamboo slatted Kendo sword. Very much like what I was told they used in the original movies. Do you use rope assisted jumps and such or is it all on the ground.

I am going to a Science Fiction Convention in the twin cities over July fourth weekend Convergence. They do have a Batlath tournement, which has been fun in the past. Proceeds go to Red Cross. I suggested that they include some other weapons. Light sabers was at the top of my list of course. Their best fighters prefer sword over Batlath despite their characters being Klingon as the Batlath is a great defense weapon but not very good offensive. (Funny thing to me as I would think that it would be a hugley offensive weapon that they would choose).

I was thinking that if you had a heavy enough double saber that the contact moves would look very impressive. You would need to limit yourself to the very short middle area but some of the moves would work. The moves would of course lead you to being skewered in a real combat unless you surprised your oppenent so much they failed to take advantage. *hehe*

the performances we do are at conventions or local childerens hospitals and such... however for one of the guys film school projects, we have use of a wire system... harder than it looks!!!! but crazy amounts of fun!!! it's a totally different kind of fighting on the wire.

the saber is heavy, but the weight is way different than my fire staff. and again it is center heavy... once it's going it can be spun fast, but with almost no weight at the ends, there is not enough mass to keep the saber going for extended things like palm spins, and a matrix is pretty hard when you think about the small size of the hilt (22 inches... close to 60 cm) and the fact that the lighted blades are supposed to be dangerous... and the saber is 7'3" something like 2 meters

Marc, that leaves a lot a area since the Columbia River runs the majority of the Oregon/Washington boarder. There is some beautiful areas all up and down the river. I'm not saying that just because I'm from here either. biggrin

I would love to try out the wirework someday. I have a gymnastics and climbing background. I understand that it is different than the rotating spotting belts when used for boost rather than spotting.

I have a copper pipe staff. Wood inserts on the ends and Kevlar wicks with copper ends caps at about five foot. I am going to start playing with some of the contact moves in the lessons section. so far all my moves are stock fighting patterns.

Hoping to add some double staff work soonish as well. I need to find a good wood for these I think just for the natural feel and heft that I like.
