UCSF is one of the finest medical institutions in the world. Everyone who graduates from their fellowships goes on to be come Professor of This or Director of That. It also happens to be located in the one place in the world that I consider to be "home."
I put in an application to do a fellowship in adolescent medicine there. I never once considered that there was a real chance that I could get in. They're way too prestigious for lil' ole me.
...except I did.
I got the phone call today.I also learned from their program director that my current boss considers me to be one of the best residents to have come through his program in years.
There's a hitch. The usual start date for a fellowship would be 1 July 2008. In my case, one of their fellows got pregnant or something and is six months behind. They cannot have an extra fellow, and so I won't be able to start until the beginning of January 2009, or perhaps as late as July 2009. Either way, I have a guaranteed position.
I'M IN!
And I'm moving home.

As for Australia, now that it seems that I'm getting time off, I may delay my trip to Australia and instead opt to do a rotation in Madrid so that I can perfect my medical Spanish.
I'd then do Oztrellia once I was done with residency and could just play, rather than having to work there, too.

Well the delay would be about 5-6 months, and then I could spend my time in Australia playing, rather than working. Means I get to meet more of you.

I had another one of those days where I was walking around and having random paroxysms of joy at the idea that I'm moving back to San Francisco.
I was listening to Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life." The lyrics reflected my feelings. In my time away from San Francisco, I've lost a lot of who and what I am. I don't have good connections to poi spinners, I've lost connections with my friends, and Burning Man has become the one time each year when I spirit gets recharged and I feel whole again.

You can find any meaning in a silly pop song (Amy Lee says it's about a stranger saying something to her that led her to leave a bad relationship with an abusive man), but somehow, this one spoke to me about my life, about how unhappy I've been, about how much I've missed all those people who are so important to me, and about how, no matter how I tried to drown it out in the din of New York City, the homesickness gnawed at me.

Six years and two months ago, I drove out of San Francisco. I had tears in my eyes as I left Stanford's campus and drove down 280 out of the Bay Area. And I found myself in Michigan, my birthplace, where I grew up, and a place I regard with deepest loathing. Never have I ever been so unhappy. I was probably clinically depressed the entire time I was in medical school. It got a bit better when I moved to New York, but New York always felt strange, foreign, alien. I'm not a New Yorker. I'm a San Franciscan.
The homesickness has been like a stomachache that never goes away. I tried not to think of San Francisco, I tried not to look at photos of anything west of the Rockies, and I *definately* didn't visit. I knew that I wouldn't be able to handle the pain of having to leave it once again.
Until I posted this thread.
I fly out to visit over Columbus Day Weekend next month. It doesn't hurt anymore. I'm going to check out apartments. I'm going to swim with Stanford Masters. I'm going to explore. I'm going to hang with my friends. I'm going to drink it all in without fear of being overwhelmed with grief.
I don't mean to imply that San Francisco is perfect. It's got its share of issues, of course.
But it's my home, and it's where I want to be more than anywhere else in the world.

Funny how many songs there are about San Francisco. There's also one about a "City by the Bay."
Most people I know would rather give up their careers and work as garbagemen than leave San Francisco. Most people who move there never leave. People who grow up there and strike out to discover a new place wind up regretting it.
I think that's why it gathers so many songs.
I defy anyone to spend one clear sunset there and then leave without wanting to stay forever.
Well, this time, when I leave it'll be feet first.

HOP has been a home away from home. In fact, it was the move away from SF that stimulated me to post on HOP.
Don't worry, though. You won't lose me when I go back. This has gone from a home away from home to...a home.

It's a gorgeous day in New York City. Cool, crisp autumn. Trees are still green, sky is a bright psychedelic blue, wisps of clouds, golden light from the sun. Children were playing, people were walking their dogs, the city seemed to be truly alive. It was one of those days when I love New York City and everything about it.
I snapped a photo of the view up Lexington Avenue from 79th st. A gorgeous shot. I sent it to three friends in California with the caption:

Congratulations on getting accepted into UCSF, the most prestigious medical program out there, imho. I used to be in medicine, but not for me. And you get to live in San Francisco! Though NYC is loads of fun too, I've visited SF many times and lived in NYC for a few years. Anywhoo, yay for you!
