Chewbacca died during the Battle of Sernpidal, him, Han and Anakin Solo were rescuing refugees. Chewie threw Anakin (Han's youngest son) onboard the Falcon, sacrificing himself to honour his lifedebt to Han. The Wookies are proud of the fact that he died doing this, and that it took a moon to bring him down.
