hey there. ubbrollsmile

the new play dvd (“play 2006” – catchy title huh? smile) is in the process of being made and we’d really like people's opinions so that we can try and make the next one even better. first of all we’d like feedback on the last dvd and secondly suggestions for things you’d like to see in the new one.

so, what did people like and dislike in the first dvd? were there any sections you particularly enjoyed or found annoying? did you like the music? did you like the menu? did you like having two discs? did you like the cover? was there stuff that you hoped would be on there but wasn’t? how did it compare to other festival/spinning dvds? the more feedback we get the easier it is to make the next one.

then secondly, is there anything that you’d particularly like to see on the next play dvd? - like specific sections or ideas that we could use. all suggestions welcomed.

please post and help make mine and strugz’ lives much easier.

cheers hug

edit: i just realised that i've only said play and not the play festival, so if anyone's looking confused i'm refering to an object manipulation festival that takes place in shropshire: the play festival website

Yep, ditto on the workshops. I don't know how much footage you had/have but that was the only thing that annoyed me a bit.

Mainly because i was too drunk/stoned/asleep both last year and this year to make all of the workshops i wanted to so was really into watching them on the DVD,

but quite often every time i started watching somebody it would cut to something else...probably my own fault i know for missing them in the first place, but just a suggestion!:)

On the last one i loved all the little hidden bits, like Strugz breaking into his car and stuff...cracked me up! Really nice touch!

Yes as people said, more of the actual workshops (but then I realise it would be cheating and would be impossible to fit ALL of them onto the DVD!)

perhaps putting up peoples hop names as thy flit by one the screen...

that way people who have never met but have spoken on here can recognise each other next time.

or people who spoke at play but didnt realise they knew that person online could say..."oh!!! that was you!!"

other than that it was great. biggrin

i also liked the little hidden bits, they were fun to find!

Renegade (unless is was hidden or I am blind).

The only major issue I had with the '05 DVD was the initial quality of the footage- the wobbly camera was a bit of a distraction. I was glad to see tripods everywhere this year biggrin

No seriously, id agree on the music there spadge - although we were limited to what we could use and didnt really have time to pick music we liked due to lack of time - (but duncs already eliminating that problem this year as im sure hes well on the way with collating music to use for us wink wink *POKE*)

It was strange though i found the stanleys choic stuff worked pefectly for how i felt about it all - its sometimes easy to get lost in your own feeling when cutting things together.... especially on a personal scale.

Workshops workshops! we have an idea, but i hear what you are all saying, although its one of the hardest things to film - at the end of the day the person is teaching you guys - not the camera, so what your all looking for cant really be captured at play in the moment, which is how most of the filming is done.

Do not fear though, we have plans to cater for all smile

The new dvd is going to be a lot less stressfull and time consuming from my point of view as we are planning to fit it all on one disc this time. Call it all the really good bits wink

Please keep any feeback coming on th last one, lots of time was spent on it and like to bags said it will help develop the next (which will be awesome with our new found knolwedge)..........

at the end of the day, the festival is yours that a few people put togther for you, as with the dvd, we put it together, but its yours, so request away smile

Or just read this thread and dont post. But if i find a complaint anywhere in the future and your name isnt on here somewhere, then i will hunt you down, smother you in nuttella and let loose a pack of savagley hungry jack russles on you biggrin

**realises that due to the wierd nature of some folk round here he may have just doubled our complaints list**

thanks people hug

okay, thanks for all the feedback thus far, but more would be even better:

here’s a summary:
workshops
as strugz says, we have a plan for this, so there should be proper workshops
that you can learn from on the next dvd (hopefully – will confirm later).

hidden bits
yep, they’ll be hidden bits on the next one. if fact, since the hidden bits
seem so popular, i think the menu for the next disc is just going to be a black
screen so everything’s hidden and you just have to click around randomly. yay!
less work.

interviews
anyone in particular that people want interviewed?

more of vixen's boobs
okay i’ll have a chat to vix about that and see what i can do.

names
only problems with that are: not everyone’s on hop and so hop names will
confuse people who don’t go near hop; normal names would confuse people who
are on hop; collecting both would be a pain in the ass; we don’t have pictures of
everyone there so some people will be left out. but if anyone can think or ways
around this...?

more of aimée’s bum
yep, can’t see that that’ll be a problem aimée. strugz actually had a camera on
your bum for the whole of the festival. it’s going to be a special feature, so
that any time while you’re watching the dvd, you can just click a button and
see what aimée’s bum was doing at that time. ubbrollsmile

renegades
there are some hidden renegades on the play 2005 dvd and they’ll be some
renegades on this one to.

music
what did other people think of the music? i didn’t find it depressing but if
i’m in the minority then we’ll try and make it more upbeat in this one.

sell on hop
distribution is down to mr dunc so perhaps he’ll appear and answer that one.

groovy, what else?

One thing that i think could be improved is the to do with the shows... it would have been good to have the music over the top of the shows ( umm not sure if that makes sense?) rather than hearing all the background noise of people chatting near the camera?

I dunno if this could be done... I know with our show this year the music wasn't that loud and it was hard for us to hear it when spinning, so it would be good if on the DVD the music was played over the top and you get a proper feel for how the routine fitted together with the track.

Does that make sense??? Is that easy to do?

interviews: I liked the randomness of the Durbs interviews, picking random wasted people and asking them silly questions is always a great entertainer. Also it would be nice to hear a bit more from the people behind it like Dunc, Sym, Rossco and MattyB in the lead up to, during and after it (impractical I know, but it's just an idea)

names: maybe we could have some sort of a rogue's gallery where people send in a picture of themself with their name on it , then 'all' you have to do is make it accessible on the DVD, and people could choose how they wanted to present their names/ID so no one could complain about invasion of privacy.
Failing that, maybe a bit about the HoP community that gets involved in the festival: some sort of 'origins of PLAY' talking about how the people behind it came together through HoP and stuff?

Aimee's bum: Sheer genius. ubblol

Ben - cant believe its not been sorted already

Can't you? I find it easy to believe. Firetoys and Oddballs are interested in selling it as well.

Ben, whats stopping you buying it over the play site? I'll have a look but apart from the country selection I think it will work...it's only Dunc shipping it anyway, so you could just email him and pay though the site...

Names: I don't like the idea

a) It's not a HoP festival, it's open to all. People who are not on HoP should be as welcome and as bigger part of the festival as hoppers. (so me posting this here is pointless, we should be talking about this on the play web site)

b) HoP is too much of a clique at the moment, I don't want to make it more of one.

Music: I think it's great - I really thought it summed up what everyone else might have been feeling.

Dear 2bags,
I would like it very much for you to interview Sym.
Some people may not remember Sym as he was asleep most nights by about 9pm, but he was a big factor in Play and I think he should be interviewed and his hard work should be recognised.

Also, I like the Aimee's bum idea, why isnt there an Aimee's boob cam as well? smile

Kindest thoughts,

Perhaps I am bias as I am Sym's Number 1 fan, but I think for the amount of hard work Sym did he hardly got a mention at the festival.
When we were at latitude we met some guys who'd heard of Play and Sym said "oh I help organise it", and they were like "cool you must be Dunc". rolleyes
It'd just be nice that the public were more aware that is was Dunc, Sym and Strugz's festival. smile
Perhaps you could be like the 3 muskateers--but naked wink ubblove

I think it's like the whole being a front man of a band thing, everyone remembers Jim Morrison but no one would even recognise the names Ray Manzarek, John Densmore or Robbie Kriger. But they were the band, they wronte the tunes, Jim was only the lyricist.

It's probably because the first festival was mine, my idea, my promotion, my money. And it kinda rolled on from there, even tho Sym (and Strugz) came onboard officially much later it was still me who dealt with the general public and pushed most of the promotion (with Chris) for 2007.

We'll make sure everyone knows more about what Sym and Strugz and everyone else does in future, we have plans smile

As for naked.... I don't think folks would appreciate my wobbly bits being paraded around and Sym is so hairy we wouldn't be able to see his wink ubblol Strugz, it looks like it's up to you to be the naked front man of play 2007! *hubba hubba* wink

It may be about personal taste, but the music has to fit with the footage, which I thought it did smile

Really enjoyed it, and I'm not sure if it happend itentionally or purely by accident , but I thought some of the playing/movemant in some parts were beatutifully in time with the music.

You dont know how many un-educated non-spinners I've sat down and made them watch it.
My dad is currently borrowing it to show to his boss smile
Think it sums up the whole experiance and community brilliantly. I'm im sure without a doubt that this feeling will be conveyed in this years DVD.

Havn't got anything else to add really that other people havnt said! I think the DVD is fantastic, but if you had sold me all the raw footage I would have been equally pleased smile
