just a quick question. is lighter fluid that is sold in supermarkets for use with BBQ's the same as paraffin???

no its naptha.
It burns a hell of a lot hotter and has a much lower flashpoint (far more chance of gettign a big fireball when lighting).
You should also NEVER put smouldering wicks anywhere near it!
Lamp oil (often citronella cented) is mostly paraffin though.

Lighter fluid is a combination of napatha and pariffin. It burns hotter with a lower flashpoint but doesn't burn up as fast.
This is the reason that you can take a wick lighter and fill it with regular lighter fluid and it will light for about 2 weeks. Fill the same lighter with pure napatha and it will light for about a day and put a little more ware on your wick.
