Hi Everyone,

I'm actually in Perth (Oz) at the moment, but I'm moving to Melbourne at the end of this month for work. I was recently introduced to fire twirling by a friend (who use to perform) and was also referred to this site.

I've been lurking for a while now and thought that now'd be a good time to register an account since I'm actually interested in picking up fire twirling as a hobby when I'm in Melb.

Anyway, a bit about myself. My full name is Chi Sum Cheung (Chi for short). I was born in HK but have been living in Perth since I was 5. I work as an Oracle DBA (database administrator) and have a keen interest in all things computer related smile Other hobbies/interests includes reading, going out to movies, martial arts and (about to pick up) fire twirling smile

I haven't actually got any gear yet, so if anyone has any suggestions or hints for a new beginner, I'm all ears!

Cheers,
Chi

A good tip i'd give to any beginner would be to get some long socks, a few plastic sandwich bags and some rice.

put them all together and you have your very own sock poi biggrin

happy spinning ubbrollsmile

Thanks all for the welcome smile

Pretz, I've dabbled in a few martial arts... done ninjutsu (first martial art... still unlearning a few bad habits from it!), kung fu, judo, akido, free style (ie boxing)... learnt a bit of "kendo" (technically ninjanto) as part of ninjutsu, and mucked around with karma (pair of sickles) and sai (pair of "forks") a bit, which i've found really help out with fire twirling.

ravehead - thanks for the tip smile I've pulled out a bit of chain and have been swinging that around a bit, the sock is probably a little less destructive though smile Any particular tips as to what is good to start on? (poi? twirling stick? short/long staff?)

Love the free lessons on this site! (has really sped the learning process!) Hopefully I can have some photos to put up in the near future (when I reach melb!) smile

If your into staff, I found that learning with a somewhat shorter staff was easier (about 5ft). biggrin
