So I was working in the emergency room last night.

I had two patients who I was taking care of. One was 18 months old and the other was 14 years old. Both came in with what looked like the same virus.

Vomiting, diarrhea for 1-2 days.

So I was busy taking care of them when I started to get a belly ache. And pretty soon I was folded over in the nursing station holding my head and my stomach.

There has been this terribly fierce gastroenteritis virus running around lately. We don't know precisely what virus it is because there's no point in identifying the infectious agent if it doesn't affect your management of the patient, but it seems to be a very aggressive virus. Kids have been coming in sooner after the onset of the illness and they're much sicker than they usually are with a gastroenteritis.

And now I can explain in grisly, personal detail exactly how it is that way.

Over night I didn't sleep at all. Nothing would touch it, not ginger, not benadryl, not tylenol, nothing. I had to call in sick this morning and I've NEVER done that before.

So I took myself down to the emergency room at Beth Israel, stumbled in, and said "I'm going to pass out in a second, so could someone please take me to a stretcher?" Within 15 minutes they had an IV line in me and I was getting fluids and an infusion of an anti-nausea drug.

I'll take horrible intractible pain over horrible intractible nausea any day of the week.

At least I'm feeling a lot better. Many of these kids feel this way for days.

hug big hugs doc, get well soon. I remember when I had food poisoning for 3-4 days, I was home alone and i had a 5 month old labrador puppy to look after! I couldn't move, I was sick and had diarrhea constantly. It was hideous. I really hope all those guys and dolls get well soon. Sending lots of love and light hug

Its virus heaven down here in Hastings atm..
First I get vomiting and reeeally painful tummy, then as soon as that cleared I get a sore throat - which later turns out to be tonsilitis, which turns into a biznitching cough...urgh.
Nearly better though!
