It seems to be working, and tis a lovely avie! welcome to HoP!

I just dropped in to deliver a golden retriever, a white picket fence, a volvo and a front door bell that goes 'bing bong', to match the wife and 2,5 children smile
Shall I just put them over here in the corner?

Interesting combination, computer science & welding: do you have any piccies to share of weldy-things you have designed? I'd love to see some!

hope you have fun here!

My state of mind is not yours to define!

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

I don't have any pic at the moment, I mostly work with stainless steel. I'm working at a shop that makes vent hoods, counter tops and stuff like that. nothing worth showing off. On the side I build roll cages for off road truck, or drag/race cars. I'm proud of them, but most people don't really care about that field.

But I've been going to raves for a long time now, always loved the music... and enough years of watching bright flashy things spin around and around and around and around...*gets dizzy*....sorry....anyway, I'm wanting to learn now. I've picked up a little from people I've met at show(mostly just butterflys and weave.currently working on BTB butterfly) So that's what landed me here.

My first question would have to be, is it woth the money to buy a set of beginners poi from HoP, or is there a simple way to make a good set to learn with.

Hi Dedphrog,

To be honest I haven't tried the beginner poi from here, though of course I'd always recommend you buying things from HoP out of gratefulness to Malcolm (the guy who began & runs the shop and the website) for providing us with this lovely online community smile It is also very simple to make something of your own though: simply get yourself a pair of kneelength socks, and put tennisballs, or juggling balls, or rice, or some other not-too-hard object in the bottom of them for weights, and start spinning!

The drawback with socks is that they stretch while you use them, so they feel different from poi that have strings or chains. If you intend to move on to firepoi at some point, it is well worth getting or making a set of those to practice with, so you are really used to their weight and length before you light up for the first time.

I also used to make practice poi by making a small hole in a tennis ball, and inserting a "hollow wall plug" - that's a direct translation from the dutch name, i'm not sure what they're really called in English: they're the kind of plug with little 'arms' that snap out for putting screws in plasterboard etc. Once the plug is firmly in the ball, you can screw in a hook to which you can attach a string or chain, for practice poi that don't stretch. You can experiment with making handles you like, inserting swivels so your chain doesn't get twisted etc.

Have you found the lessons section of the website and the video section of the forum if you're looking to learn more?

Good luck!

thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to buy a set from HoP, mostly bueause the sight is great. And like you said, once i step up to fire, flames, and singed hair I would like to be really familiar with my poi.

I've come across the lessons here, and also on DoMorePoi.com(they have frame-by-frame videos) so mostly now all I have to do is practice...alot.

and in the US we just call then Drywall anchors, or spring anchors.

Also...goes anyone one know of any spinning/fire spinning gatherings in the southern US?

I've been raving since 1996, First one was in an old warehouse on long island. They had the WHOLE place strung with blacklights and 55-gallon drums of ballons filled with blacklight reactive paint everywhere!...most awsome thing ever.
