well, i got forwarded this, and it seems pretty useful... have a read:

Subject: Fw: How to quickly & simply recognize a Stroke...& save a
life...!!!
During a 'Barbeque' a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she
assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics)
and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her
cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been
taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm, Ingrid passed away). She had
suffered a stroke at the 'Barbeque' - had they known how to identify
the signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.

It only takes a minute to read this:
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the
trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed an getting to the
patient within 3 hours which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the "3" steps. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victimmay suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the
symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking threesimple questions:

1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.

2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) ( i.e. . .It is sunny out today). If he or she has trouble with any of these
tasks, call emergency immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identif facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

Useful info, nontheless.

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

As a care assisstant I've worked with many elderly stroke victims. Having to prize a female clients hand off of a zimmer frame before I can sit her down is not my favourite part of the job..
(think Sin City when the guy is using his teeth to prize off his chopped off hand from his gun..) When the hand gets in a position..it wants to stay there.

Recognizing a stroke early can prevent death, but its a hard long struggle afterwards. Especially if you're 85+..

Thanks for posting BlueCat hug

I hate these kind of chain emails with such a passion that I always feel the need to swallow them with several spoonfuls of salt. Is the information reliable? I'm sure the good Doctor will be along shortly....

I was wondering if it was reliable as well. If it is, then its great because its the sort of thing more people should know about.

it is the same sort of tests a doctor does, trust me i was there with my mum

strokes tend to effect speech and movement such as grabbing for something simple and not being able to get it or saying something and not making sense

after my mums first tia she couldnt pick her cup up and started crying as everytime she went to grab it she totally missed it and with her second tia she kept saying she wanted her socks on in the hospital meaning she wanted her nighty from home and was determined she was right
they also get very confused about surroundings so ask what thee name is and age and any other simple questions and tell them to do simple tests like pick something up and fllow something with there eyes

What she said ^
People who have sufferd from a stroke will often have partial or some paralyses on one side on their body. (hence having to peel somebodies hand from the simmer frame, she can get it there, just can't get it off easily)
You'll notice some patients have a side of their face drooping. Getting them to smile shows you that the face is lined up correctly..
The same with lifting both arms, one may not get up to to the same height as the other one.
Also speach and consiousness of the world around you is affected. And la de da, you test their speach.

My next door neighbour who was a pretty huge musician in the 70's once played a gig while having his 2nd stroke! He got raptourous applause and comments because of his crazy unique playing style like they'd never heard before! ubblol he said that for the encore (the ENCORE!!) he had to play slide with his hand over the top of the guitar neck because he couldn't turn it upwards! ubblol Then drove home before getting help! Now THAT'S rock and roll baby biggrin

Now in his 60's he still performs around Europe, and across the garden fence ubblove

So to make this part of the thread topic, if you know someone who's had/having a stroke you can tell them there's still lots ahead, they needent be thinking it's the end of the world they just have to work a little harder to get over it

Let's relight this forum ubblove

I'm pretty sure that this depends on the severity of the stroke.

The diagnostic test is well supported though. Even snopes says so.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

First of all, any sudden unexplained change in mental status should be seen IMMEDIATELY in the emergency room. It doesn't matter whether it's confusion, a seizure, or sudden inability to use one side of the body.

Second, TIME=BRAIN. It is not true that all strokes can be 100% reversed within 3 hours, however significant brain damage can be prevented.

The arm, smile, and sentence test is a good screen. "Repeat back to me" is also something you can use. And watch their gait. Sudden unexplained onset of a limp can also explain a stroke. And remember that strokes usually are painless because the brain has no pain receptors in it.

However, someone who has just had a seizure might pass the stroke test. They should still be seen immediately, especially if they have never had a seizure before. Obviously, patients with longstanding and well-known seizure disorders who sieze and are uninjured afterwards can probably go on about their day.
