My particular favorite way to ruin wicks is to get them wet. Cuts burn times in half and they might not recover to full burn times. Your two best ways to preserve wick in my opinion are to:

1) Keep them in a plastic bag when not using them so they don't get damp/dirty (cuts down on smell too)

2) Use practice poi for practice and fire poi for fire. No practice with fire poi, bad poier, bad!
