As some of you may already know we've got an incubator and have been tring to breed quail. The first attempt was unsuccessful and we think this was because the quail that laid the eggs were past their peak laying age.

Three weeks ago we bought some free range hens eggs from the local farm shop and put them in the incubator, a week later we did the same with some quail eggs (so they would all hatch at the same time) and we have had success!!

So far we have had two chickens hatch. We have also had two quails hatch - the stripey one in the middle and the other one is hiding behind the yellow chick. As you can see in the picture, another hens egg looks like it is going to hatch too biggrin

Once they have all dried out and gone fluffy we will put them under a heat lamp for a couple of weeks, then they will get to go outside into the run in the garden. I'll keep posting pics because it is quite amazing to see how quickly they grow up!

If any one can think of any name suggestions that would be great! (no fried chicken references please! biggrin )

but but but...were those eggs you bought eating eggs? does this mean that the free range eggs i get are likely to be fertilised? does this mean i'm not really a vegetarian? moral dilemma...do i eat foetuses or support torturous living conditions of the layers? tell me an escape clause, please!

They were 'eating eggs' but I bought them from a local shop where all the stuff is from local farms because there is wayy more chance of them being fertilised. The egg doesn't start developing into a chick unless it kept at precise temperatures so even if the eggs you buy are fertilised they haven't even started turning into baby chicks yet so there's no need to turn vegan just yet!!

although...
Dunc sent me this ages ago...
supermarket quail

I think it will take a while before i have a chicken army! I can only fit a dozen eggs in the incubator! For now it will be a tiny-cute-fluffy-chick-army, destoying the world with cuteness biggrin

*grins stupidly* yay for cute little hatchlings!!!

i remember when i was little my dad bought a couple of hatchlings from a produce store and me and my sister spend HOURS playing with them, and dressing htem up and putting them in the dollhouse etc... so much fun! but then they got all big and had to move down to the chook shed at the bottom of the paddock and we werent allowed to bring them inside anymore, and they didnt like being played with cause they got all wild and not tame anymore frown

Most of our eggs are refrigerated here so I dont think I could put them under a chook. frown
One of our chooks has gone missing and the other one is becoming more and more neurotic and is hanging out with the budgies. ubblocoBudgies are not impressed. She may have gone broody yet again. We tried putting eggs under her one time but it wasnt successful. The kids kept collecting them and we got some unpleasant suprises when we cracked eggs or the kids dropped the eggs on the way in.
The neurotic chook has tufts out her ears like an old man and I think we may have to rehome her or get more chooks.
When we first got the chickens as pullets my little boy used to take them in his toy car for rides but he is kinda over chickens now

Just realised that HOP has become very fishy and chicky....yayayaya!!!

I get eggs delivered work that haven't been refridgerated... i wonder if they would be fertilized.... *wonders about having baby chickens* or there is the free range ones from kangaroo island in the shop next door.... maybe lex will get a pet, hehehe

Not sure if Lex like birds???....she was pretty taken with Wombats, have you noticed, and the roos and the rabbits, even the donkey and LLama. She did like the emu though. Sort of. Can you get Emu eggs wink, thatted be one huge omelette.

Of course everyone likes little chicks, what am I saying.

Be careful what you wish for Dragonfury, you may end up with a menagerie. Then I would have to bring Zak over to play with them all.

Hmmm i might find out about the emu eggs... could be a possiblity. Though i dont know about eating it if its going to cost me lots, i'd rather have a pet Emu... then i could release it into the park lands, he he he

Thats fine, anyone is welcome to visit. Ben, Lex and i said anyone can visit.

Phaerie...a quail hatched last night so phaerie it is!

There is a chicken on its way out but its taking ages, its so frustrating watching because you can't help the chicks out of their shells or they die. So i just have to patiently wait, watching it struggle. Shouldn't be long now though

They are all looking very fluffy this morning, now they are all dried off so i'm just waiting for my camera batteries to charge up. The quail are so cute - all stripey!

Gita, Phaerie and Linden biggrin

So i've named then in order of hatching/order of posting.
The Chickens have little coloured leg bands to tell them apart. The quail, although i bought quail leg bands, are too small and the leg bands keep falling off! Think they'll have to wait a few days!

Quail - Gita
Chicken - Myco - Red leg band - Black Chicken
Quail - Linden
Chicken - Dragon/Spike - Orange leg band - Yellow chicken
Chicken - Gnorc - Yellow leg band - Yellow chicken
Quail - Phaerie
Chicken - Angel

I'm not sure what breed they are. I'm tempted to go to the farm that supplies the shop and ask them, that or just wait and see. I think i am too impatient so i'll pop up to the farm this week.

Myco is being a bit of a bully today. It pushed Phaerie into the water dish! poor little soggy quail!
