some thoughts...

i would love to learn to ride a motorbike, (hmmmm....one day)...

it will be almost a year no driving for me soon.... i was talking about this with a friend last night and stuff, even considering going driving soon,

well today as i was walking to my first day of a new job there was an RTA (road traffic accident) about 2m from me....

no one was seriously hurt, no ambulances needed but it was still kinda scary...

a motorbike was coming up the outside (in a hashed area i think) and a car pulled across, looked like car was about to do a U turn, but he later claimed was going to pull into a park or house.... not a good place for a U-y at all...

anyway car dented and stuff, motorbike dented (was a lovely bike), biker hurt leg a bit, hope he see's sense and goes to doc's later,

i obviously didnt walk off, provided pen and paper etc, but then the biker desided they needed to get police cos he didnt think car driver was going to admit U-turn thing, i dont think he would admit either... but then i heard to never accept blame at the scene? - so anyway i hung around but as was late to work on first day they said i should go, so i gave my details incase of any witness stuff and went....

not sure i could have been any help anyway,

so yeah... it wasnt bad and everyone is ok..... and i still would love to ride a bike...

BUT i worry loads about motorbikes and cyclists when driving a car.... i know too many people who ride, this has just made me think if i drive again anytime soon i will worry even more

basically just wanted to send out a message to you all if your out and about driving, pulling right, please take an extra check.... and if your riding a bike take care....

love and huggles to you all

Psycho_lemming, great message regarding driver/rider awareness.

Along similar lines, my state Government is running an awareness campaign. Its aim is “to improve understanding and cooperation between car drivers and motorcyclists by showing the factors that each has to contend with on the roads.” It works really well because it is a joint project between the Ttraffic group and Victoria’s major motorcycling groups.

Suggest you have a look at the clip from their television adv, it’s available at Sharing the road with motorcyclists site

There were are a lot of interesting comments when Flash recently [Old link] biggrin

I wake up every morning and say "car drivers will try and kill me today", and so I ride accordingly.

I never, ever assume I have been seen by a car driver. I am constantly changing my speed to ensure I am not in any blind spots. My eyes have never been so busy! Constantly scanning, scanning, scanning for hazards.... At night, if someone is stopped to turn right into my path, I swerve a little within my lane to bring more attention to my headlight and increase my visability.

And, lane-splitting (filtering) is not legal here, although everyone does it. The fact that it is not legal makes me very cautious & hyper-aware when I do it, especially when crossing intersections & driveways in grid-locked traffic.

I have spent $2650 on protective gear - helmet, anti-fog visor insert, gloves, boots, armoured leathers, kevlar lined cargos and wet weather armoured jacket.

Next weekend I am attending an advanced learners course.

Go for it psycho_lemming.... Just do everything you can to make sure you're not another sad statistic. smile

People die in cars every day. You rarely hear anyone telling you that you're crazy for getting your drivers licence, do you? Perception.

bloody cage drivers....

My uncle died in motorbike-car-accident when I was 14. I didn't dare to try a motorbike before that and even less after. Here in Finland they teach in driving schools what you have to know about bikes and their driving when you are in car. And of course how to cooperate with bikes and bikers in traffic.

Would've liked to write more, brains don't work yet, it's 6.32 AM hehe

I used to ride a quad bike when i was around...10 yrs old...
you're only supposed to ahve one person on it.
My friend's stupid uncle put five of us on that thing and rode us back home cos there was no other way (this is in a HUGE farm, by the way)
And he was riding down these HUGE trenches.
I had notihgn to hold onto but a little piece of grating and hes going at 80-90 km per hour.
I nearly fell of at one point and was SCREAMING for him to stop. He did ecentually, turned and asked "you okay" i said "yes but-" AND HE STARTED DRIVING AGAIN!!!!!

People can be very immature when ti comes to these things...i mean...4 8-10 yr old kids ona bike wiht a lunatic...no helmets...no place to hang on...

i ride my bike back from uni every day and its scary how many drivers just dont notice you or assume that as you're on a bike youll be going very slow so just pull out in front of you. i am by no means a mad cyclist but i do go fast (well as fast as you can make a bmx go) to keep up with the traffic. its safer to stay at a good pace so you dont have so much trouble crossing lanes to turn right.
flash fire just made me realise how much concentration i actually put in to getting safely to uni. you have to make yourself noticed all the time
anyway im bored now, the sun is shining, outside calls smile

Good points flash, I thought lane-splitting was legal in Victoria, but I’ll check on that now. Apparently drivers are meant to check their mirrors every 15 seconds rolleyes

So in reality, you really have to concentrate when riding, much more than car drivers. This means “looking ahead” so you have plenty of time to react when some guy decides to cuts in front of you. Same for the twisty bits, line up the corner so you are looking at your exit, as you come into the corner.

I haven’t read it yet, but there is an article on “how to pick up a bike” in this fortnights Australian Motor Cycle News aka the green horror, and also a centre fold of athis beast, the MT01

Have fun at your advanced learner course smile

Thanks stone - I will let you know if I learn anything at the course (am sure I will learn lots). Lanesplitting on the RHS is legal in Victoria, but us suckers here in NSW aren't allowed to do it, nor are we allowed to park on the footpath. *facists*

although it can be quite scary on a motorbike i'd never give up the freedom of zipping down the outside of traffic queues , especially when there's a big flash car stuck in it .
