I just admitted the KEEEEEUUTEST little girl. She's a little asthmatic who was in the ICU and is now all better so she's being transferred to the floor for overnight observation before she goes home in the morning.

How old? Well, she told me (and showed me with her fingers)! "I'm free yearss old!" First thing she said to me.

So I just went right ahead and fell head-over-heels in love with her right then and there. ubblol

And then she proudly showed me her sticker. Well, being the pediatrician that I am, I always carry at least a few dozen stickers in my white coat. So I offered her a choice of Blues Clues, Scooby Doo, or Mickey Mouse.

"I want Mickey."
"Ok, honey."
(mom): "What do you say dear?"
"Preeeze!?"
And so I gave her the sticker and with no prompting:
"Fank you!"

And then she cooperated with the entire examination! I think she's seen a lot of doctors in her short little life.

And when I turned around to leave and said "Bye, honey! See you when you get to the floor!" she said "Buh-bye, Dokor!"

ubblove ubblove ubblove ubblove ubblove ubblove ubblove ubblove

And this, folks, is why I'm a pediatrician.

Awww reminds me of the kids I see at my work (mainly with their parents after their dance class nextdoor giving them a treat desert, usually a cartoon character gingerbread man).
Kute things those little ones. It seems young things are very cute, both humans and animals.

Well, Will, if you're trapped at 6 months, than maybe.

We're allowed to take patients up to age 25, but generally at 18 or 19 they go over to the adult side.

Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions

Author Unknown

When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard.

My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on.

When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away.

My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back.

When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have much rhythm so I sit self-consciously and listen.

My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't know them, they make up their own.

When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up my hair and pulling me back when I walk.

My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall to the ground laughing.

When I pray, I say thee and thou and grant me this, give me that.

My kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad dreams away tonight. Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss my Mommy and Daddy."

When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty carpets.

My kids sit in it. They see dams to build, rivers to cross, and worms to play with.

I wonder if we are given kids to teach or to learn from? No wonder God loves the little children!

Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I wish you Big Mud Puddles and Sunny Yellow Dandelions!!!

And the above soliloquy is why I'm a pediatrician.

I was never so keen on mud puddles, but why would I ever destroy a dandelion without first blowing on it? biggrin

Gita, that soliloquy pretty much captures it.

I was never so keen on mud puddles, but why would I ever destroy a yellow dandelion? They're pretty! And as for the cotton-ball seed form? They're fun to blow on! biggrin

Awww... on this note. I was going to turn in an English paper last week, and as I was heading up the stairs, down the hallway there's this little girl (probably three or so) walking down the hallway....backwards biggrin biggrin It was seriously the cutest thing, and I stopped on the stairway and watched her smiling, and she looks up at me, and gives me this HUGE smile, and then keeps on walking backwards into one of the offices.

Made my whole day better. wink

i've got a cute kid story! okay, so this summer i worked as a book shelver in the childeren's section of the library. i was putting away some books in the 200s, and was sitting on the floor, and there was annother book shelf perpendicular to mine, and so i was blocking the way. this little asian boy about five or six years old says "'scuse me" so a scoot over to let him through. after i let him through, he turns around and says, "is that real?" it should be mentioned at this point that i had a mohawk that wasn't spiked at the time. so, i pull it up to demonstrate that my hair did indeed have a death-grip on my scalp. his reaction: "cooooool!!!" i seriously wanted to take him home with me that kid was just so darn cute!

I ultimately want to work with teenagers, too. Most of my patients this last month were under 1. In fact, of my my 5 patients over 1, two were seriously developmentally delayed (one was a "train-wreck," a 10-year-old kid with spastic, quadruplegic cerebral palsy who basically could do nothing but lie in bed and breathe and have 10-14 seizures a day).

I like babies, but once they hit 2-3 and I can actually talk to them, THEN I like kids a lot more. The teenagers are the best because they're so darned cool. If you remember that they're actually young adults and not just kids, and if you can remember to actually listen to them, you can learn a lot from them.

I mean little kids are fun, but look at people like Sparkey or Kinudin. They're both really cool guys with fresh perspectives on life. I learn as much from teenagers as I do from friends of mine in their 70's (and yes, I do have friends that old). If I chose a job in which I didn't work with teenagers, then I'd get very little contact with teenagers in general because they don't pop up that often in adult life or in general pediatrics. And, when you respect them, teenagers have a lot to offer us "adults."

I think many pediatricians are reluctant to work with teenagers because teenagers aren't as easy to control as little kids (who don't really get much of a choice in anything) or as adults (who tend to listen to other adults). Part of it is that teenagers are dealing with a set of issues that most adults have already dealt with, and many adults find that to be uninteresting.

But if everyone's an individual, it's very interesting to see how different people deal with a given set of issues...and how the way a person deals with a given set of issues changes the next set of issues that they have to deal with. After all, what makes life interesting is the change of sets of issues that we have to deal with. It starts with learning to walk, talk, and feed ourselves...and it ends with losing those same abilities. It's the part between those two times that turns me on.

I'll never be a teenager again; and I wouldn't want to be. I hated it. But I'm in this job because I want to help other kids like me through it.
