In case you hadn't noticed, Texas is the second most populous state in the union. And it never ceases to amaze me how fellow americans have no idea what texas is really like - so how can I expect all these europeans to have a better clue (which they sometimes do)?

You say that to several of the Texans I know and you'd get yer bum handed to you on a platter.

In their minds they are still Southern of heart which means Confederate supporters.

hehehe...there ya go, heyahoney. I've lived in both TX and FL, and I can say I definitely prefer TX. At least it has real trees (i know, parts of FL to do, but there are gobs that only have palm trees, and those provide no shade).

your friensd should read their texas history a little more diligently before acting like jonny reb:

Texas didn't really fight in the civil war very heavily even though they were a confederate state, and many Texans volunteered for the union army and others had strong uninionist opinions. General Sam Houston, who won the Texas war of independance from Mexico and was the first president of Texas when it was an independant country, refused to be a confederate general (partially because he was too old, but mostly because he was a strong unionist) and resigned his Texas governernership because of Texas becoming confederate (which he heavily fought against but this was basically impossible to avoid), saying, "In the name of the constitution of Texas, which has been trampled upon, I refuse to take this oath. I love Texas too well to bring civil strife and bloodshed upon her." (they just don't make leaders in the US like they used to). Texas was basically a non slave owning state that had to join the confederacy because of geographic considerations (very few Texans were wealthy enough to be slave owners at the time). Had Texas not joined the confederacy, it would have been immmediatly run over by it, and the union would have had no way to offer Texas protection. Neutrality was also considered, but again not politically possible (no way to half-succeed from the union).

It was largly the treatment of all southern states (including Texas) by the union after the civil war that solidy put the lingering Texas mind set in the confederate category.

just don't call us Yankees (which europeans always insist on doing), and by and large Texans won't get nearly as pissy about the civil war as say someone from alabama or mississippi.

I have to say there is a lot more difference in people throughout Europe than there is through the US.
A few years ago every country had its own currency, but even now there are still a lot of countries not using the Euro.
Every country has different languages, traditions and religions.
So if you're going to generalise amongst Europeans, we are more than at liberty to generalise amongst Americans.

Just a friendly pointer biggrin
