So on Wednesday afternoon of last week, I flew to Atlanta for an interview. On Thursday I had my interview and came back to Ann Arbor...

For an interview here on Friday. I finished my interview and then went home to frantically do laundry and put everything together because on Saturday morning I had to get on another plane to...

Minneapolis. I had an interview there on Monday and then got on a plane to go to...

New York City. In New York City, I started to get a sore throat and noticed that my neck and shoulders were itching. I had the interview, met regyt, missed my plane out, spent the night with regyt and her family, and started to get a rash and itch on my knees.

And so I looked up the rash as I was sitting in the airport on Wednesday...

And the only description that matched what was happening to me was scarlet fever. Which is silly, right?

So on Wednesday at 11:30, I land in Detroit, take my make-up EKG test (which I passed! Horray!) and then page my doctor saying "I'm desperate and need to be seen because I'm going to leave tomorrow for an interview in...

Boston. (Are we getting that in this entire period of 9 days that I only get three days in my own bed and that I never really unpacked?)

So here I am in Boston covered in scarlatina rash, itching to high heaven, and I go to my interview.

The day ends at 1:00 PM and so I get on a plane and head back to Detroit where I get in a 45-minute traffic jam. At that point, so much had happened that I swear that if there had been a gun in the car, it would have looked just a little too good.

I would rather go through my father's death five times than relive the last week.

But I do have to say that without regyt, it would have been a lot worse.

Yeah, the rash is definately better today, although it still itches a fair bit. But my ankles aren't swollen and my hands are much better. I'll probably have residual discoloration ("post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation" is the $25 word for it) for 3-4 months at least.

So Scarlet fever is basically what happens when you get a normal old-fashioned bout of strep throat...

And then have an allergic reaction to it. So basically it's like having strep throat AND being dipped bodily into poison ivy.

Most of the rash is resolving now. I still have discolored patches on my thighs, knees, and forearms and my palms itch (which is not typical for scarlet fever). I can see the anatomical landmarks under my skin on my feet and ankles (tendons, veins, etc.), which I haven't been able to see for a few weeks.

I'll probably have some residual discoloration for a few months. frown

As for NYC, we'll get our pictures taken next to each-other and then people can see the difference. I'm the handsome one. wink

So it looks now like it wasn't scarlet fever. My hints are this:

1) It involved my palms, which scarlet fever shouldn't do
2) I'm not peeling, which scarlet fever should do.
3) Two other friends (regyt being one of them) got it, too, although not as severe as I did, but scarlet fever shouldn't hit three young adults in rapid succession.

So my new self-diagnosis is erythema multiforme, which has a major and minor variant (I had the minor variant). Erythema multiform is a systemic response to any number of things: an infection, cancer, a drug, etc. Seeing as how three young adults all got it at once and in rapid succession, I'm thinking it was either a strange strep strain or a wierd virus.

Anyway, scratching now stops the remaining minor itching and the rash is fading rapidly. My ankles are no longer swollen and I can walk without pain.

Eating is still a bit rough...
