The Senate is poised to pass legislation that would give federal prosecutors new powers to shut down raves or other musical events and punish innocent business men and women for hosting or promoting them. The bill, known as the Reducing American's Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act (RAVE Act), was just introduced in the Senate on June 18th and has already passed the Senate Judiciary Committee. It is moving VERY rapidly and could be passed by the Senate as early as next week. Worse still, the Senate leadership considers this draconian drug war bill to be so uncontroversial that they are trying to pass it under "unanimous consent" rules, which will mean no debate and no real vote. It is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that your Senators hear from you today. They need to know that this bill is a danger to civil liberties and is unacceptable.

ACTIONS TO TAKE:

--Call your Senators and tell them to stop S. 2633, the Reducing American's Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act from becoming law. Tell them that innocent business owners shouldn't be punished for the crimes of their customers. Tell them this bill has dangerous anti-civil liberties provisions that they need to be aware of, and this bill deserves serious debate.

You can contact your Senators through the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. To find out who your Senators are go to: https://www.senate.gov/senators/senator_by_state.cfm

--Please forward this action alert to your friends and family. The Senate needs to know that voters find this bill unacceptable.

MORE ON THE BILL

S. 2633, sponsored by Senators Durbin (D-IL), Hatch (R-UT), Grassley (R-IA) and Leahy (D-VT), would greatly expand the so-called "crack house statute" and potentially subject innocent business men and women to enormous fines if customers sold or used drugs on their premises or at their events - even if they were not involved in the offenses in any way. If the bill becomes law, property owners, promoters, and event coordinators could be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars if they hold raves or other events on their property. This bill is a part of a Justice Department strategy to halt all musical events they don't like, such as raves. For more information on this bill, go to https://thomas.loc.gov/
and under "bill number" search for S2633.

Ok what makes a rave a rave? Lights loud music and people (if I leave anything out let me know).... this sounds like a reguler party to me! If they have the right to come into an abandond barn then they have the right to come into your home. Also I have been to a rave sponserd and held at a Planet Hollywood resturaunt/club. Some may not call it a rave but it was called one none the less.

first off i would like to say that this new bill is crap, why in the hell would you expand the 1980 crackhouse laws?!?!?!?! they are completely a backwards way of dealing with the drugs. they are prosecuting the legal end of the rave and leaving the illegal end away!! no matter what the govt does there will still be drug use and there will still be kids blaring loutd music and dancing there asses off. the crack house laws have done almost nothing for the us, exceptcost us millions and millions of dallars. as well more and more people are getting thrown into jail for non-violent crimes that do not affect anyone except themselves, ex. drug abuse. i will definately be doing my part in keeping this bill from making it as a law.

and for the raves being illegal, no, no and no. raves began as hippie parties back in the early 70's when hippies used to go out to an abandoned place and play there music and do drugs, and dance and just have fun, now days they are usually thrown by large music company promoters and are thrown in large venues that are paid for and they even have to have permits here in tx to let us dance past 2am!!! we cant even dance unless the club has a permit of the promoter has a permit!! wtf??? anyways raves are a great place to dance your ass off and meet tons of ppeps, and most of all ENJOY YOURSELF which is getting harder and harder to do with all of the strict non-needed laws that the govt is pushing on to us. i mean come on alcohol is way more deadly than drugs!! wait wait im not gonna go on about this topic so ill leave it at this...

why is alcohol still available in stores when it is the cause for more than 50% of the deaths of young adults between the ages of 15-25, and drugs are responsible for less than 10%??!?! if you can answer that then please do so.

Welcome to the United States of America, where false puritanism, and not cool-headed reasoning, is used to solve problems.

By golly, if we can't get people to stop using drugs by force, then we'll use more force! We'll make this into a utopia if we have to make it into a police state to do so!

And the people who are doing this are the most vehement flag-wavers, too.

I'll write a letter, but it won't accomplish anything.

It might just be me being a bit suspicious, but does no-one else find it a little odd that it's called the RAVE act?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Actually I think that the acronyme (sp) makes perfect sence. A well thought up way of raining on good peoples parades!! I dont like the drug aspect of it, and agree that untill drugs like E and pot are made leagle then there needs to be something done to stop them, but this is wrong and is way too much BS!!

there are ample things wrong with our government my fellow americans. we really need to come up with something else to do. i write letters make calls and sign pettitions for things i don't agree with all the time and see NO RESULTS. every paper i've written since the 8th grade has been on drug policy reform. it is sickening what you can learn in all that research. it is empowering for any righteous cause to educate people. so many teachers professors classmates sisters brothers parents are shocked when they finally hear the other side of the story.
so there really needs to be a new plan of action our government won't hear WE THE PEOPLE BUT ALL THE SHEEP OUT THERE HAVE TWO GOOD EARS!
my government makes me feel sooooooooooooooooo

raves held at clubs or private land are NOT illegal!!! here in az there is an organization called "dancesafe.org" you can check them out online. they go to raves, set up a booth, and hand out pamphelts and information on the hazards of drug use. not just "don't do drugs" but the dangers of mixing and how drugs affect your body. i'd like to see "aa" show up at a bar...

I heard there were ads during the superbowl that said "if you do drugs, you're funding terrorism"

I could make incredibly observant remarks about the obvious here.. But I really can't start talking about America's international policy, or internal drug policies. Its just too depressing.
