Just a quick hello.

I've only just started twirling and am scouring the Internerd for information, seems like there's an awful lot to learn, can't wait to get stuck in.

Any advice on where to start? I've had a pop at the basics and a butterfly, where to go next?

Cheers

I have only been doing it a while, best place to go next is learning the weave. Once you have mastered that you can go on to corkscrew and windmill really easily as the moves link together.

Hi woods

welcome wave

I'm in the same situation as you...... Poi hate me ......but I will WIN! Do you hear me, you evil bruise making poi??? I will beat you Mwhahahahahah*coughsplutter* hahaha.

So far I can weave, butterfly, alternate butterfly, giant butterfly and almost chase the sun, mexican wave and over head butterfly (these 3 usually end up with my head a bit tied up or a bleeding nose). Thread the needle is an utter mystery to me. I can't do it. I just end up bound at the wrists with poi cord. I've been using the lessons on this site. Good luck.

Gidg can I please borrow your pogo stick?.... I need to change a light bulb in the hall.

Well, I managed to get back. Thanks for the welcomes.

I've had a look at the lessons on here, slowly trying to get to grips with the weave now.

Gidg - 4 W's? I'll give 'em if you'll tell me what they are! confused

Skul - I'm quite pleased that I've managed to get somewhere, despite lots of pain and bruising. I've even resisted the urge to burn/destroy/kill the things, even though they've been pushing me to. It's like some kind of sick addiction, it hurts, but I can't stop...... redface

I think the 4 W's are:-

Who? (are you)
Where? (are you)
What? (do you like in life, films, books, music, food etc)
not sure about the 4th, because there is Why and When left
maybe its Why? (did you start spinning) or When ?(are you going to feed me chocolate) ubbrollsmile

Yes it is an addiction, but its not sick. Spinning is very very good for you!

P.S. I still can't get Thread the needle.... I wonder if its important...... maybe I need never know how to do it?..... Maybe I should just find a friendly local spinner that can teach me.......it has to be easier to have a personal tutor rather than running in and out of the house to look again and again at the video footage on here. I have to admit though my constant messing up of the move is giving the locals a good laugh. ubbtickled bounce bounce2

I only got thread the needle this week. It's all to do with timing. Start from butterfly and then right hand over left and left over right pulling back towards you. So right hand is pulled back up towards inside elbow and move down towards wrist. God its hard to explain! I don't know just fiddle with the timing and then you'll get it. I had it shown to me but it still took a week of much bruising!

Thanks Daisy. I won't give up. I'm too damn stubborn for that.
I just got the corkscrew..... bounce bounce2bounce bounce2bounce bounce2bounce bounce2 YAY! I do keep hitting myself in the chest and leg (not hard enough to stop the poi but they clip me) Would this mean my poi cords are slightly too long? I followed the length advice thingie.....

Who - Woods, 27 year old blokey.
Where - Sunny Birmingham, UK. sunny
What - In life I like music (rock/metal/funk/punk), juggling, diablo, poi and motorbikes. Films (stuff like Blade, Lost Boys, any View Askew productions to name but a few). Books - erm, I don't do books as much as I should! Food & drink - anything and everything.ubblol
Why - because I couldn't do it, so I wanted to learn.
When - when you save my life or I marry you, that's when I'll share my chocolate.nana

Damn this rainy weather, indoors is just way too cramped to spin.

You're not bending forward enough if they keep hitting you. Length is immaterial?!!! wink Try standing upright more and you'll find you are doing the windmill which is much easier. Try going from forward weave into corkscrew then stand up into windmill.

Bruises are all part of the fun, wait till you get burn scars to show off!

Well it looks like Skully gave you the four basic W's before I did, but that is what I was looking for. Now what we really need to do is talk about this chocolate sharing business. Does it count if I put your life at risk so that I can save you to get the chocolate? wink

Skully, I have had several people give me pogo sticks for christmas and/or my birthday so I have a couple that I'm not using at any given time. Just drop in my thread and help yourself. Right now I'm on the red one.

OK about the TTN, try the double once you have the regular down. I love the double, it looks so very cool. How it works is that the hand that is forward spins twice while the other arm is doing a single.

It's kind of a weave sideways and infront and behind your head (as opposed to "side to side")

You can get to it from split reels, but rather than only one hand spin infront and behind at a time, they both do a circle Windmill lesson vid

Gidg, a cunning ploy - I like your thinking. If you tried to kill me then saved my life, I reckon I could stretch to some of my cheaper chocolate. The good stuff is for special occasions only! biggrin

I finally got my head round the 3 beat weave at the weekend! bounce bounce2

My name is Skully and I'm a chocoholic. I have been known to open other peoples easter eggs very carefully and eat all the chocolates inside then re-wrap the egg and box it back up. I'm not proud of myself.....but I have to say I could get a job at Cadbury packaging eggs any time I like! biggrin

Skully - did you ever hear the age old rumour tht if you worked on the production line at Cadbury's you could eat as much chocolate as you wanted? Apparently the theory being that after 70,000 Creme Eggs you'd get sick of them.

Yeah right!

Hello from Sunny Telford!! wavehello

As for the length thing, if the total poi length is slightly shorter than your entire arm i.e. you can spin them vertically at your sides AND between your arm and chest it's a much better length to play with, moves will open up a lot easier and you'll be able to find new stuff a lot easier too. Overly long poi limit most moves and introduce more problems than you'll need right now!

[whispers]

shorter is the way forward

Now where's that dairy milk bar gone that was precariously hanging out of the back of my pocket? confused
