off to amsterdam again soon and would like some recommendations for a decent, friendly hostel please
i stayed in a cushy hotel room last time but can't afford such luxuries this time!
would prefer to not stay in the larger ones but personal accounts of any of the hostels would be well appreciated...

We stayed in a great place called the hotel de harmonie (cheap and cheerfull) but deadly and friends have gone back since and stayed there too. He gave us a house boat outside the hostel to ourselves. My mates were given an apartment across the way to themselves.
The guy who owns it is a head case but in an amusing way.
This is him so I don't know if it's still open and if it is, you probablt won't get to laugh at his antics.
It's in a great location and is cheap as I say.

cheers for the recommendation james - it sounded perfect
unfortunately it seems as if tommy's antics earlier in life have led to the closure of his hotel
all the numbers i've found are now unobtainable and hotel de harmonie is not available for booking over any of the travel web sites.

I've lived in Amsterdam but unfortunately have never had to use any of the hostels, so no first-hand recommendations, but I have heard rave reviews about the "Flying Pig". As far as I know they have 3 hostels located at different locations throughout the city.

The Flying Pig is fantastic, there are 3 around town but the nicest one I think is the one closest to the Vondel Park, i've stayed there loads of times it's really freindly. They also have a 24hour bar which you can smoke in.....bonus

Depending on how many people you are going with - the following apt which sleeps up to 15 could work out at 8 Euro a night! The receptionist at work went with a gang of people and they had a grand old time!
However shoes or pets are not allowed in the apt and the balcony is only allowed on the balcony
But it does have a cool pornstar bedroom

gonna check the availability of the pimped out luxury pad and go for that if we can get it.
i think the fact that it has an electric piano swayed my mate into going for it
there's only two of us so it'd be a bit coiny but a long weekend in the dam living like kings sounds alright like and we can probably get a couple more people up for it by then anyway
if it's not available i'll go for diz's recommendation of the flying pig near the park - cushion floored bar with carlsberg can machine
15 mins out of centre is pretty much ideal as i plan to get a *decent* bike this time.
and i'm going to remember where the rental shop is so i can return it this time too...

Lucky you, off to the Dam! Might be heading myself in a month or so for a weekend. Think I'll go for the houseboat option next time tho.
