Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

Me.

anyway, yo yo word Van. 'sup me bumbaclut breadbin bloodclot? kiss
I hope to go to Berlin for my 3rd year as Ive told you. Will you still be in Germany in 2 years time? (if everything my end goes to plan that is!)
What would be the chances of living with you? wink
Go on. You know you want to. tongueoke:
or ... whats the housing and stuff like out there... how expensive.. even though i dont know what im doing..
Im hoping to get a job with a friends friend.. but I dont know if thats in Berlin.
Anyways, if it is, and I do end up in Berlin for a year, I shall hope to get to as many of the Juggling workshops there as possible. Thomas Dietz will be there and I soooooooo want to meet him. And theres also the advantage of having Coleman (plus many others i imagine) come to vist us lots.
Which shall be great.

Anyhoo, I hope you are well.

I'd certainly ask Babajaga about the housing. She's lived there her whole life and knows how to find the good deals.

Berlin is about the cheapest big city in western europe rent wise actually. I have a 60 sqM 2 room flat well into town (old west side city center area - not the coolest place to live, but quite nice) for just under 500 euros a month with all the utilities figured in. you can typically get a very nice room in someone elses flat for 200 to 300 euros a month, and if you want to live a little rougher but in a "cooler" more urban warrior enviroment, then you can get a totally accpetable room for even 150 to 200 in certain areas of the old east side, though it may be a bit drafty and need a bit of TLC. The key to Berlin is to hunt a LOT when trying to find a place - because often you can find a better place for 30% less in a better location than the last place you looked at.

My work contract here only goes one more year unfortunately, but who knows what will happen between now and then!

Note that there are two good performers schools here in berlin, plus the RAW where there is a semi-continuous juggling or acrobatic or some sort of thing workshop type enviroment going on. Dues are quite low at the RAW (which is a series of converted warehouses for artists BTW). There is also one other RAW type place I have heard of that is more exclusively for high-brow jugglers and their private practice spaces, but I've not been there.
