Well, since so many people had their intro threads wiped out and are starting new ones, I figure I could use these events to start my own, ultra-untimely intro, seeing as how I've been around HoP for like 3 years.

So then:

Name: Vance

Alias: Van, Vanize, Add, Zaidou (my 'African' name) ... oh, and I almost forgot, Pixie Banger! (don't ask if you don't really want to know).

Age: 34 (35 now)

Location: Potchefstroom, South Africa (WSW of Jo'berg) presently. Grew up in Houston, Texas. Most of my Family lives in Austin, Texas. I'm moving to Berlin, Germany in January for 2 years. (ok, been in Berlin for a year now)

Favourite Toys: sailboats (been sailing 29 years), surfboards (been surfing 19 years), poi (3.5 years) (almost 5 years now)

Occupation: Reasearch scientist (Ph.D. in space physics)

Hobbies: Too many - sailing, surfing, poi, scale models, travelling, collecting stamps and paper money from places I visit, Dungeons & Dragons, SCUBA diving, tropical fish, reading, painting, drawing, getting projects ready for Burningman, ....

Your favourite website/s: www.burningman.com

Music: I'll listen to most anything except modern country music. My favorites are classical (e.g. vivaldi, beethoven), trance, classic rock (led zep, hendrix, beatles), and what used to be called alternative (foo fighters, pixies, whale, ...)

Movies: blade runner (director's cut), strictly ballroom, band of brothers (more like a mini series I guess), amelie, ... er, I know there are more, but I can't think of them just now.

Books: mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and history.

Philosophy: Technological Gaiaism, Quantum Fatalism

Favourite Colour: Burgandy ( sorry Alice!)

Favourite Quote/Saying:

From a movie: "Gentleman, we have a blind date with destiny, and she just ordered the lobster!" - the Shoveler (Mystery Men).

From literature: "The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love" - W. Somerset Maughn

From personal life: "I was just telling Sara K. that I have no particular segway between being stone cold sober and really wasted. Then she kicked her glass of water across the room..." - Zouwera (Christmas day, 2002, west africa)

So that is that. We'll see if it goes anywhere, eh?

I was thinking it was some sort of statue or gargoil, but I thought it might also be a dog doing something weird.

I don't know... paranoid people make me a little edgy - I could see how someone could be paranoid of paranoid people, as long as they themselves didn't realize they were paronoid. That would be like being allergic to yourself!

Maybe your child doesn't like gargoyles?

If there had ben a clown statue in the back yard when I was growing up, I would have taken a hammer to that.

Vanize, when do you move to Berlin, and for how long?
One of my mates is living there again this summer, so I might pop over to visit her from France.

I'll be in Berlin for 2 years (that is how long the work contract is anyway) starting January 15th. I'm getting there just in time to have a couple weeks to settle in before the Berlin film festival starts!

I hope you can come by for a visit!

Also, I may be in Nice in April, in Paris in late July (both of those for science conferences), and am planning on going to the European Juggling Convention at the end of July (I know it is in France, but not sure where). So perhaps we could try to get together one of those times too?

And only 4 more days before I am out of this bo-hunk town! And then it is 3.5 weeks of watching wildlife in Kruger National Park, hanging out on the beach and diving with whale sharks in Mozambique, raving my ass off on new years eve in Cape Town, and white water rafting under Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe before moving to Germany!

the countdown begins...

T minus 84 hours and counting.

WOOHOO! cool

Depending on where it is, the juggling convention sounds like fun (although i juggle about as well as a dead hippo!) ubblol

You should come and visit the Ardeche, where i live and work.
I'm going to put up a post about it soon, for if anyone is interested in coming over.
Fire spinning and other toys by night, in a beautiful and remote area, or in town (lots of street performers there), and canoeing with me during the day or kicking back and sunbathing/ swimming.
Oh, and lots of fit scantily clad girls (thats attractive and physically fit)! spank

Actually, I intend to get pretty intimate with Europe in the two years I am there, so definitely look for me to drop by some time. I've seen lots of European highlights, but only in that whirlwind "I only have two weeks of vacation" American kind of way.

When is the best time of year to visit the Ardeche?

Yipeeee!!!
*does the excited dance!*

Erm, best time of year? Well i'm there from may 9th - september 5th. From about mid july to end of august is always quite fun!

During that time the small town of Vallon comes alive on an evening. Stalls line the streets, and the street performers come out to play. Stiltwalkers firebreath on the edge of the crowds, whilst up in the bar-lined square everyone from singers and dancers to jugglers (& contact) and diabloists (is that a word?!) play and perform. On the next street up from this is an area which is often roped off for fire performers.

Almost all the street performers are French, but i talked to a few last year and they all seem really nice. I'm sure they wouldn't mind us playing with them.

On a break from the bustle of the small town, it is a short journey to the river. Night time deserted beaches make for perfect spinning spots.

Oh, and the people of the area can't seem to get by a week without having an infamous french fete! beerchug Alright by us!!!

Its gonna be a good year - i can feel it! biggrin

Lets steal a spaceship and head for the sun, and shoot the stars with a lemonade ray gun.

Oh, you should come anyway!
I'm gonna explain it all when i post this up properly, but if your in europe it could be mega cheap.
Hitchings pretty easy round france, and we can pick people up from Vallon. You can stay on centre if you bring a tent (i think for free), and my manager is a juggler! We'll feed you for a small fee (sorry, but centre rules- you gotta pay for the food).
So all in all has the potential to be a very cheap holiday. biggrin

Right on! I'll definitely keep that in mind - so basically all of august, huh? I was thinking about going to burningman, but I had a good look at my finances this evening and I doubt I'll be able to pull that off with all my student loans coming due. This sounds like a lot of fun and MUCH cheaper... cool

The more I think about it, the more I am thinking this is the thing to do. beerchug
