Damn it's hard to learn poi in a vacuum.

This winter has been so brutal to my poi skills. I've only learned two moves in the last 7 months (forward and reverse 4 beat TTN.)

I'm uninspired and the weather isn't helping. I know that there must be a few of you in similar boats. So I figure if we post what we're working on it might be a motivator to improve. (Either that or you people need to pass through New York City more often.)

So what specifically are you all workin' on?

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

(Only makes sense for me to go first...)

I'm working on...

Cleaning up:
My damn ugly Rev BTB weave.
Moves/flares into and out of reverse 4B TTN.
All transitions into/out of bicep thru wraps.
Giant Butterflies and altering timing with them.
Maybe getting another recoil wrap or two into my wrap sequences.

Learning:
Rev 5 beat.
Forward BTB weave.

Putting off until I find a decent teacher:
Split Time Butterfly Anything
Waist Wrap
Hyperloop
Isolations

What about you?

(And let's not turn this into a bragging session else we will be accused of further pissing contests... just specifically what we're working on so we can make goals and such...)

*Edited to add stuff I forgot...

Nice thread NYC

I'm working on:
moving move fluidly with my fire fingers
moving smoothly in and out of a weave - buzzsaw - weave combo thing
making my doubles work more smooth

but the exciting things I'm working on at the moment, aren't moves, it's other bits and peices - dance, movement, costumes, having fun and:

tool maintenance and construction of new toys - I'm kind of in a development mode at the moment - as opposed to a performance mode (different perspectives and considerations) so am scheduling more tool workshops with my crew, and the exploration of new, innovative toys and props - hope that makes sense

top thread nyc

playing with now:

catches, contact stops and throws
the middle of the string (isolations&hyperloops)
[update, 16 june: learning loads of wicked ww variations courtesy mr moohaahaa]

on (top of) the list to learn now the weather is getting good:

windmills - 4bt and turns
waistwraps - the other three btb and corresponding full ww's [update, 16june: a sunny weekend means only 1 btb to get now! ]
cleaning up turns with btb weaves
split-time bf weave facing the other way

does anyone else ever get the feeling of having this looming list of 'things i feel i should learn' - and i don't mean a list compiled against other people's proficiency.
i don't even mean a list of moves you can't do yet but know exist.
i mean a list of moves that you can spin one or two variations of (by variations i mean the basic ones eg. 3bt weave variations like fwd, rev, turn to left, turn to right etc.) but are missing some variations of too.
for example, i only learnt to spin the windmill the other way about two months ago - i could do it just one way round for the previous 9 months or so and for some reason never got round to learning it turning or facing the other way.
its like this with lots of my spinning (can only spin certain moves on one side or in one direction) and i now have a list of 'gaps' that i find it hard to motivate myself to deal with.
anyone get what i mean or am i just lazy...?

Cleaning up my split-time reverse TTN.
Cleaning up my butterfly weaves.
Cleaning up forwards and reverse isolated buzzsaws
Buzzsaw fountains
More hyperloops and airwraps
More isolations
BTB waist wraps

Well, after catching up with Glass at Kingston last weekend, I'm now trying to get the hang of isolated buzzsaws. Right-hand can do it straight out the bag - left-hand is, well, shit

It's quite nice to feel like I'm progressing again though - I'd really started to feel stagnant (can you feel "stagnant"?) but now I've got some new stuff to learn and my new Aerotechs I'm all inspired again suddenly

Plus it's sunny.

Apart from iso'd buzzsaws, there's a couple of BTB things I'm trying to get, BTL (Between the legs?) moves and also some more acrobatic stuff, although the latter is just out of curiousity and some rudimentary rope-dart/chainwhip exploration

Good thread - I think people should go back and edit their posts when they've acheived their goals, a sort of diary of progress

yep you can feel stagnant.. someone pull me out of it please! I've not learnt anything in ages!

What I've been trying to learn recently is
forward BTB,
Buzzsaw Isolations
4 beat BF forward and reverse
Waist wraps (got one side - albeit very messy)
BTB TTN (I can't get it going but can do it once I got the 'bounce' right)
BTL stuff..

Oh so much so much to learn - just severe lack of confidence and ability

I honour you as an aspect of myself..

Well after a long break from swinging poi, coleman and hugo finally dragged me back into it.
thanks guys.
So im working on Level 2
(trying to find the construct again and block poi.. not circles.)
Eeeeep
I feel like a beginner again, who don't know how to make circles cleanly.

Mind you, after such a long break from poi, I don't know how to make all the regualar circles anyway.
Arrrg. So what an I going to work on next, going back over all the simple poi again and cleaning it all up, planes and timing. just drilling poi

Props for starting this thread NYC

Today I will mostly be trying not to:

castrate myself with through the legs moves,
choke myself with neck wraps,
& confuse myself with hyperloops.

Other than that enjoying flowing, playing & stumbling into new things.

@nix?

working on 'the skirt move'. damn hard to get smooth and even vaguely in plane.... damn those hyperloops for ruining my planes.

the skirt: put your hands on your hips(or nearby ) while spinning in wall plane and try to keep turning....and if you have wings/ropes it looks like you're twirling a skirt....

There's so much to learn and so much time. The list does only seem to grow though.

I'm currently working on butterfly waist wraps and btb butterfly weave, reverse btb ttn and reverse 5 beat btb weave.

Looking at everything split-time and transitions (loads of fun).

And a trying to smooth out a couple of transitions like forward btb butterfly into bth butterfly and rvs bth butterfly to btb butterfly.

I live in a world of infinite possibilities.

i'm working on so much stuff right now, mostly because i'm teaching myself staff too. so i just spend forever switching back and forth between the two. its really cool to see all the ways the moves are similar because sometimes it teaches you different ways of thinking about the moves and different things to try with them.

but in terms of poi, the big things i'm doing now are airwraps, forward btb weave which i've almost entirely got down now and managed to turn into reverse once without smacking myself in the face, and btl stuff.
i was going to work on some tumbling today but i got sidetracked reading Good Omens such a funny book...

Since I've hit yet another plateau in my poi spinning, and one in my staff spinning too, I've started learning to juggle a bit more than the 3 ball cascade.

I'm also working on getting my poi basics solid, since I'm teaching some people in Wycombe now. I'll just wait until I get hit with some more poi inspiration and some new moves start leaping out at me

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Controlled pendula with yakali walk to windmill to yankali drop with bfly variation.

Weave in time with sitting knee roll, sword style.

Cloud pushing with a gillie-pendula ending with an arm roll release (this is single long poi/dart)

Single arm supported back bridge with alternating hands, poi still in motion, even along the ground.

*edit for addition

I haven't even touched my poi in weeks, sadly.

Must start again.

Last I can remember I was working on forwards btb weave, cleaning up buzzsaw fountains and wanting to learn buzzsaw hyperloop/isolation.

Im working on my weakness'ssss, and also my patience. I think it is improtant not to go to far beyond yourself, so i work both sides and also reverse both sides. And im working on keeping it fun.
Trying to learn :
weave recoil wraps
Reverse ttn
btb weave recoil wraps
but i really want to learn that crazy phoenix wing move those glowstring boys do,aka btb alternate bicep wraps @ same time. Anyone even know the real name of that move anyway???

Its all just smoke and mirrors

Hhhhhmmmmm ...

Finally figured out:
that damn 5 beat reverse weave (will show you the trick to it if I make it to NY on Sunday)
btb forward BF

Cleaning up:
Forward btb weave
5 beat BF weave
turning from rev btb BF to btb BF

Working on:
turning from rev to forward btb weave
btb BF weave
those motherf@$#ing hyperloops
the wicked pisser
the skewrel
Giant anything
isolated buzzsaws
wrap combos
some stupid,crazy,suicidal throws

What I've really been trying to train myself to is a butterfly combo that goes kinda like this ...

BF -> btb BF -> rev btb BF -> rev BF -> over the head rev BF -> rev btb BF -> btb BF -> over the head BF -> BF and only allowing one full beat of each between transitions

Hopeless when it comes to:
thru-wraps

Could care less about (until someone comes up with a definitive answer of what they are):
Waist wraps
Fountains

Waiting for evolution to grant me an extra set of elbows for:
7,9 beat weaves
5 beat btb weaves
6 beat corkscrews

And that's just poi ...

To be noted:
Basic doubles staff moves
Basic devil stick manipulation
3 ball showers
3 ball bouncing cascade
2 ball juggling with either hand
Basic contact juggling
Basic diabolo manipulation

Need to practice more with:
Long staff

Need to get myself some:
meteors

I saw this thread awhile ago and never got around to posting. At the time I was working on reverse 3bw and forward TTN (Had reverse but couldn't do forward)

I can now do both of those and can turn my weave and can barely turn a windmill.

I need to work on 4b windmill, 5b weave (Edit:Learned 5 beat), buzzsaw and BF weave.

Also I need to actually learn some long staff and rope dart. Plus I need to practice my fire breathing with water and polish my fire eatting and tranfers and dragons breath.

Oh yeah I need to buy a balisong/butterfly knife and start learning some tricks with that.

That's my goals for the summer.
