Hey Luke! This is going to be kind of a weird story. I scanned the first page of intros to see if there was something I really ought to reply to... well, it would be better to scan the first several but i never do... anyway i saw yours and was kind of half intrigued but scrolled up again, then right before i was about to click back to main index I scrolled down again... and decided to click on it.

And I learned that you are 10 days younger than me, live in the same town as my ex roommate from california, and listed dreamer as part of your occupation.

Right.

Well I suppose there was a reason for noticing you! Hi. And welcome.

"Almost done with Uni" ... what a scary thought!

I'm done for the summer which is pretty cool... no more projects and deadlines to worry about :-S.

I still have a year of my course to go overall ... yes, I'm doing a kkrraazzzy long course, it's like 4 academic years with a placement year in the middle (which I did last year)... so I'm just hangin' onto that student lifestyle for just as long as I can (more time for the dreaming!). I'm kinda freaked out about the thought of being finished in a year... I still have no real idea what I'm going to do... my placement year really opened up my eyes to what working life is like and I've decided that I don't really want to be an engineer (what I'm studying) afterall... although the course is pretty cool!

Tell me... is the real world as scary as it seems?

...sorry, that was a long answer to a simple question :-P ... in short, I have a year left at uni, but I'm home for the summer! smile

A "Weird but cool" existence eh?... confused

*Runs off to read Kyrian's intro thread*

*Runs Back*

Ok, I didn't read the whole thread because it's hhhuuuuggggeeee!! ... slightly confused though with dates though... are you starting to study this fall?...
confused

Where in TX were you born? I only ask because I lived in Houston for a year (when I was 4/5)

My thread is indeed huge, altho less than many. Incidentally, its also very old, as its survived a couple of incarnations of the board... in fact I think it may be my orginal intro thread from when we started having and introductions section! Most of the posts on it are from then.

I am indeed starting to study this fall. I studied in america for a few years, then dropped out, now I'm going to england and doing a completly different course. I'm very happy about this, really.

I was born at Fort Hood, I guess we lived in a town called Copperas Cove. I hope living in Huston wasn't too bad. I've not been to texas in my memory and don't have much desire to go.

And the long answer to a short question is my trademark as well, worry not! Information is lovely. I like long answers better than short ones nine times out of ten. The real world can be as scary as it seems, but it can also be wonderful. You just have to live your dreams, and not let someone else's get in the way. Which can be, in short, a challenge.

What type of engineering?

Oooo... I see, so when you say "York" you mean "York" here in the UK... I thought it might have been some krazy american lingo for New-York uni (NYU I believe you call it), not the York here .... Ummm... don't really know too much about York... oh, I visited the railway museum there many years ago.

OK, now I've said the word 'York' way too many times and it's starting to sound really weird

Living in Houston was ok... well,if I'm honest I can't really remember the day to day stuff that well. I guess when you're 4 you don't really have much of an opinion.

I'm studying Aerospace Engineering... that's usually enough to kill a conversation... the course is pretty cool because you get to see the big picture (basically how the wwwwhoooolllle aircraft works), but in reality if you went into it as a career you'd just be looking at this tiny part of it most of the time, and as soon as you loose sight of the big picture it becomes quite dull. I found this out last year on placement, so now I'm having a career rethink. I did consider being a teacher... but I'd probably have to cut my hair and be vaguely responsible... or maybe something with planes, but not design and manufacture... erk, I think a trip to the career guidance people might be in order when I go back in October! eek Any suggestions?? tongue

So you're coming over to study biochem?... do you have any long term plans with that?.. or did you just like the sound of the course? and if you don't mind me asking, what did you study and drop out of? and why? ... but if you do mind you can just tell me to censored . I won't be offended...

Yup, York UK! It'll be fun and exciting and I'll feel really stupid because I don't know much about all the day to day stuff I know how to do here....

I bet your course is enough to kill conversations, but I just find it more intriguing! I can see where the availible careers might not be as cool as what you study though... I had a similar if different problem....

I was studying linguistics at UCSC, and with so poking and prodding I discovered natural language processing... UCSC (University of California Santa Cruz) doesn't really offer a degree in that, but they offer arguably the best theoretical linguistics programme in the country at both the graduate (post-grad) and undergraduate levels, and with a decent cs programme to sample from and no american uni likely having a good foundation course in logic, it made sense to stay on. We're getting into the long answer phase here, arn't we....

Well, I took Compiler Design (as my first class!) and did great in it... Did pretty well in computational models, Just messed up this one quiz a bit because I wasn't paying attention to my math, and since it was like 20% of the grade got more of a B... c'est la vie... I was the first linguist to pass that course, nevermind the first non CS student to even take compiler design (In another group I would have been in the top 2%, easily, here I think I barely made top 20% and that was despite the teachers best efforts to make a curve out of us- it failed. Too many honors students... I think more than half of the students in that class graduated with some form of honors! Unheard of! Anyway, it was fun. I was doing ok in the other stuff but I always had to work, and it was sucking up my time, my patience, always worried about money, and other related stuff. Life offered another oppurtunity and I took it...

And moved to uruguay. Got back to riding horses, although its been a slower return than I'd like for a lot of reasons. Wound up having to move back to the states for the sake of my travel partner, who couldn't deal with the changes, eventually realized that I was unable to help him and he was insane, and took off to nyc to chill and get things organized for (this up and coming fall).

Its been greatly interesting, I've learned a lot. One reason for going back to uni is I frequently have a hard time working entirely under people because I'll disagree with their approach to safety issues! So I'd like to be able to fund my own riding in part, at least, and I've been interested in genetics and molecular bio stuff for awhile... I've alwys enjoyed chem too (maybe more) and having a strong foundation in both isn't going to hurt what I'm studying, especially if I do drug metabolism...

So I'm studying the course because there are both interesting esoteric and interesting lucrative career options... I'm actually ok with routine day to day stuff to a pretty great extent... I only intend to work part time anyway if I can help it, and work on gaining a higher level of competition in my athletic pursuits otherwise. Thats another thing, there's hope of setting your hours in the bio industry. NLP has some very interesting work that pays great but you wind up working 80 hours a week, and I'm not ready for that. I could work 80 hours a week with horses, even on dance, but even the most interestig intellectual pursuits require breaks for me, if nothing else to exercise!

I fully plan to spend the next three (or maybe but not likely four!) years in the library, thirty million athletic society pursuits, and the guidance office (or whatever you call it) deciding what types of career options i should pursue. Cos I know I'll change my mind around and stuff anyway....

Incidentally, there are two major "good" uni's in New York, NYU and Cornell, and a host of smaller ones. Because america is weird like that tongue

er... that was really long.... i hope i havn't completly scared you off now... I don't know how to write short answers it seems!

hey, don't worry about the long answer, I think it's really cool that you're making things happen so that you can do what you want to do!... and woah! has it been eventful!!

I'm sure you'll handle uni life here in the UK just fine, there's not a huge amount to know or get used to really... I wouldn't spend all your time in the library... at least not in the first year anyway. Most (but not all) uni courses here don't count the first year of study in the final grade, you just have to pass... I think I studied too hard in the 1st year and burnt out ... or at least that's what I can tell everyone when I get bad grades tongue

The societies are a must though, although it sounds like with your list of interests you'll be spoilt for choice!... that's one of my biggest regrets, I'm kinda shy redface and I didn't really go in for the whole society thing in the first year... subsiquent years I've found it difficult to get involved because they're all really established with cliques etc...

basically I messed up and missed out!... frown

Don't get me wrong, I made friends and had fun, but it would've been cool to actually be part of something officially in a big way...

...anywho, next year I'm going to join the juggling society and having taken up flame staff (after many years of looking on in amazement thinking "that looks sooo cool!") I should finally be able to do something... for a year at least!...

Sorry, I'm rambling! ... i do that... tongue

I think we'll get along just fine! biggrin hug

As for getting used to things, you'd be wrong. For example, I had no idea there was such a thing as second class mail, or that mail could be deelivered in one day. (And I'm calling it mail...). I don't really know how taxes work (I'll be on the phone with my consulate come tax time no doubt) and I also don't know how to navigate nhs. I'm not used to debit cards which are not credit cards - but at least the prices of things on shelves are the prices of things at tills, which is easier! But my point it there's a million little details....

And I've never studied too hard before, I doubt I'll start now. My first year counts 0%, but it is the foundation, and I am coming in at a disadvantage, both in time off from the subject (over five years) and probably never having studied quite to the level of A levels anyway.... So I need to put in some effort. Its funny, there's a ridiculous number of societies I want to be a part of, and yorks got loads, but I've already come up with two more I think it should have as well wink And I know where to look to recruit people.... biggrin tongue

I like having a busy life. But I should spend more time relaxing too.

But now I'm getting on a couple trains and taking a trip to Jersey (new jersey) to play some strategy board games, because I'm just that geeky!

Well, that whole postal service is having some kinda overhaul at some point.. I think they might be scrapping 2nd class mail... I've lived here all my life and have no real clue about the NHS .. and taxes scare the hell out of me eek

..anywho, the basic rule in England is that if anything is getting stressful, or ... well basically if there is any kind of excuse suggest having a cup of tea .... I can't stand the stuff, but as far as I can tell most of the country must be drip fed it from a very young age .... it just tastes weird if you ask me confused

...Have fun with the games!...

I can't stand tea either. The closest I get is matte made with orange juice, which is actually very good. I will be bringing my matte (i.e. the gourd, the straw, and some of the plant) with me to england, but I wonder if I can find orange juice there! (So far I'm not convinced).

From my understanding you can also suggest having a pint, which is more my thing. I'm really looking forward to it, I think the culture will be better for me than american culture in several ways.

The games were good. I'm delighted to hear that you play board games, there arn't enough such people! I also had lots of good food, and made some fun plans for the future, and I was reminded of some interesting things about life. All in all, the day was a win. And its good to be reminded that new york city is an anomaly... it has a weird effect on your thinking and behaviour after a bit...

lolsign fresh orange juice in Britain can cause issues... most of the stuff we'd call fresh is actaully made from concentrate when you read the side of the pack.

Yeah, sitting in a pub talking crap for the whole evening is also an english tradition... I'm sure nothing annoys the locals more than a group of students invading 'their' pub... but we still do it anyway!

One of the people I lived with last year (Who's left now.. like so many of my uni friends frown ) liked playing various games. If you havn't already found them, then take a look at Chrononauts and fluxx both made by looneylabs (www.looneylabs.com) ... not board games, but very amusing card games! we became fairly addicted for a while.
